Product Information

Use this lapping tool in a 3/8" electric drill to square the upper receiver face of an AR-15. This will improve the mating between the barrel and receiver and needs to be used with a lapping compound. Pilot will also fit into the bolt carrier tunnel to keep perfect alignment throughout the receiver for improved accuracy.

I bought this tool to square up a receiver that did not hold my barrel square. The tool was barely to big to fit my receiver. I chucked it in my drill and smoothed it up with 1500 grit sand paper and some lube. It fit well after that.

Could not get a free float nut to line up at the 30 to 80 flb. Was Half a hole off. The tool was a tight fit the fist inch into the reciever but lube fixed that.(and slow straight insertion) I used a 3/8 drive drill and pointed the tool up so lapping material would not get into reciever. Held on to the reciever by hand. Found out my DPMS flat top had a high spot. Started with course grit then went to fine. Lap then check, lap again then check, ect.(patience grasshopper) Worked like a charm. Tool may not be for the Novice. (retired Aircraft Mechanic)

I read some reviews of this tool, not just on here but other sites as well (a few good reviews, but several complaints about the machining). Figured I would give it a try anyway. We tried to use this on our latest build, and the pilot / shank would not begin to fit into the receiver. Hmm...So we tried another from a different mfg...wouldn't fit that one either. Tried one more again from a different mfg, and still no luck. The tool is useless, as the pilot / shank was size for size with the receiver (No clearance), and We were not about to tear up a new receiver using a $20 tool. It went right back in the tube it came in and is being returned.

This is a good tool. Don't expect it to be extremely concentric when chucked into a drill or a lathe. It is designed to self align inside the receiver, hence the tight fit. When using this tool, I find it best not to clamp the upper tightly, but to hold it in your hand and let the tool align itself inside the upper as it was designed. You may have to sand a bit of the surface of the bar to where it still fits tight and will spin while holding the receiver in your hand.

I also had some lathe work done but for a different reason. The chuck end was not long enough to obtain a good concentric mount in the drill chuck so I had a friend lengthen the chucking stub about a half inch by cutting down some of the extra non needed material at that end. Now, it is easier to chuck without the extra wobble. The "business face" of mine was okay. Do you really need this tool? I did check two uppers that I had open at the time, a DPMS and an Eagle/Armalite, both of which would not accept a .0015 filler gauge at any point of perimeter contact. Maybe one of these days I will run across an upper that really needs lapping. I guess it just feels good knowing you have it. Yet another use for this tool; the main body mikes out at .9997. I checked the OD of a scope (Burris) and it mikes out at .9998. Close enough for this tool to set up scope rings and also to be used for finish lapping of rings. I gave it a four because of the short stub end. With the lengthened chucking stub, mine is a five.

Excellent tool that does a great job of truing the receiver face ensuring proper seating and alignment. Just be sure to keep it oiled to prevent rust.

If you dont have access ...

If you dont have access to a metal cutting lathe dont buy this tool. The manufacture failed to machine the lapping face on it. Its un-useable until this face is machined flat. This tool is a Very Tight fit in the receiver. A drill motor is going to have a really hard time turning it to lap the face after the tool has been machined properly. On a side note this lapping mandrel has another excellent use. Since it is almost a press fit in the upper receiver it make a good internal support, while the upper receiver is clamped in a vise and the barrel nut is being torqued. There is no way the receiver can be damaged, while torquing the nut when the mandrel is inserted from the charging handle end.
