Just received this stock ...

Just received this stock for my rifle in .308 with a heavy varmint (3 1/2 contour) barrel. The fit and finish were generally good, especially at this price point. I'd have given it 5 stars but for two issues. When I first installed it and torqued down the action screws the bolt would not cycle. That was a clearance problem that was remedied by filing off the last thread of the front action screw.The second issue was purely cosmetic. The inletting for the bolt handle looked like it had been chewed by beavers on piecework. It functioned just fine, but took a bit of sanding to make it look acceptable.I'm going to glass bed it today and hopefully take it to the range soon.

Great product. Just as ...

Great product. Just as described. Have not had a chance to shoot my 700 .308 yet, but I would expect performance to be improved. Install was a 5min job. Fit and finish was top notch in my opinion. Shipping from midway was lightning fast as always. No regrets with this stock. Glad I did not throw several hundred more at a HS stock.

Purchased for my "budget" ...

Purchased for my "budget" F T/R competition rifle ~10months ago. Finish on stock is ok- not as good as the McMillan A-5 that it seems to be modeled after- but very good for the price range. The v block seemed to be slightly off center in the stock- when I first put the barrel in- it just barely touched the bottom of the barrel channel- and was slightly off center (measured outside of barrel to inside of channel was greater by slightly under 1/8" as measured by my micrometer.) Used a brass washer on the front action screw as a spacer between action and stock to fix the height (as the soft brass molded to the action for a flush fit- and put barrel at a more proper height in channel.) When I get around to glass-bedding the action- I plan on placing the washer in the glass bedding to make this fix locked in for good. The stock did, however, make a very significant improvement in the accuracy of the rifle. (shrunk 5 shot groups from ~1.5moa to ~.5-.6moa with my hand loads) The sliding stud in the front is a good idea in theory- however if you do not have your bi-pod extremely tight on the stud- it tends to slide back and forth during recoil. Also- this stock is rather heavy- which for bench rest or prone- positioned competitions is not a bad thing, but if you plan on using this rifle in the field or from standing positions- the weight will be noticed. Over all- for my applications- for a budget rifle, I am pretty satisfied with the stock's performance.

Choate really did well ...

Choate really did well for themselves on this stock. The quality (or lack of) that is usually associated with Choate is simply not present with this stock. The quality of this stock is far superior to any other Choate Stock I've seen. I had one of the Choate Ultimate Sniper Stocks, and the Choate Tactical is far better. The stock is aluminum bedded and is considered a bolt in stock, however, it must be noted that I felt bedding was still required. I use a Stiller Singe Shot TAC-30 with a Krieger HV contour barrel. There are no clearance or tolerance issues. The stock is a molded plastic. If the "plastic feel" is not your thing, then you probably will not like the way this stock feels. The overall design is very close to a McMillan A-5, and feels like one in many aspects, other than its plastic. The butt spacer system is nice and allows you to custom fit the stock to the shooter and adjust the length of pull.I use a fairly large objective scope and found that the cheek weld was not satisfactory and had to add an adjustable cheek piece. I have no doubt that a scope with a smaller objective, set close to the barrel, would be just fine without the additional cheek piece. If you are uncomfortable with installing your own cheekpiece, Choate offers a factory conversion and an eternally adjustable butt plate, rather than the spacer system. Contact them and they will take care of whatever you need. I rated this with five stars (excellent) for one reason. In this price point (when I bought mine), there isn't another stock that has the features. Additionally there were no factory flaws or defects. Quite simply, it is what is says it is, and really surpasses the somewhat lackluster reputation other Choate Stocks. Choate did a really great job on this one and I recommend it to anyone looking for a tactical stock at this price point.
