Smith's Pocket Pal Multi-Functional Knife Sharpener features pre-set crossed carbides and ceramic stones, which provide the Perfect Edge every time. Carbides provide quick edge setting, and the specially shaped ceramic stones are designed to give you a razor sharp edge on either standard or serrated edges. The carbide and ceramic stones are reversible and replaceable. A fold out, tapered round, diamond coated rod is designed for sharpening serrated as well as standard edges. Unit is compact, lightweight, durable, and comes with a lanyard hole.

I got this to throw in my survival/ first aid kit when I am out in the field. While it didn't put quite a razor's edge on my SOG Field Pup, it did do a good job of keeping it quite sharp. Don't' expect to bring a blade back from the "dull dead" though, LOL. Hit the blade with this sharpener as it starts to get dull and it will keep your knife working. On the other side, it seems to work like a champ for putting a hair shaving edge on the Leatherman multi tools. It works great on my Wave. I think it's a good light weight, very compact sharpener for the field when weight and small size is an issue.

I'm very bad at freehand ...

I'm very bad at freehand sharpening, often making an edge duller than it started. This thingy is so easy to use that even I can sharpen a knife with it. It's pretty small and has a hole that you could put a lanyard in. It didn't make my cheep Chinese knife sharp enough to shave with but it immediately took out the rough grind marks and put a generally sharp edge on it. It's now sharp enough to open packages again and it may cut an animal though it's not going to fillet them. I'm ordering another one now while they're on sale.
