The Hornady Vernier Micrometer is designed to take precise measurements. A good caliber can take measurements down to .001" but for a reloader to find the actual diameter of .001" a good micrometer is required. This micrometer is perfect for checking the diameter of cast bullet. This precise instrument features a spindle lock and friction thimble and is shipped in a padded storage box.

This is NOT a Vernier ...

This is NOT a Vernier micrometer. It has no Vernier scale to read 1/10000. It is only a 1/1000 micrometer, with 25/1000 and 1/10 markings on the shaft and 1/1000 markings on the barrel. Funny thing is the instructions show how to use a Vernier scale to read 1/10000, but the micrometer does not have a Vernier scale.

You do not even get what ...

You do not even get what you pay for with this piece of Chinese junk. A micrometer that only measures in thousandths is no better than a pair of calipers. Have only had this mic for a couple of weeks and have already had to adjust it (zero it out) FIVE TIMES! I wouldn't even use this as a C-clamp. Threw it in the trash. Embarrassment to the Hornady brand.

For the price, this can't ...

For the price, this can't be beat!! The knob on the end is called a ratchet stop, and it's designed to slip when you have reached the proper tension on whatever it is you are measuring. Think about it, if you kept cranking on the big knob, you would end up bending the "C" part of the Mic, so you only use the outer knob and it slips when you get to the proper torque, then you read the measurement. Yes there are no instructions included, but obviously there are hundreds of tutorials on the internet on how to use a micrometer. When you learn how to use it, this thing works fine. The wrench will adjust it if it ever gets out of spec, but if you treat it right, you will have no problems. I've been using it to measure bullets and it works great!!

Same problems as others. NO instructions and no help. I am now looking for another one. The product does seem to be well made but with no instructions or help it just takes up space on my bench.

This micrometer seems to ...

This micrometer seems to be well made; nothing loose, good precision in manufacture. My problem with it is that I don't know how to use it, and there are no instructions. There is a knob at the end, which I don't know what it is for. There is an adjustment wrench included, but I don't know what I am supposed to adjust.I emailed Hornady asking for instructions, and they never replied. This seems to be a good product, but I would recommend against buying it unless you already know how to use it.

This mic is probably made ...

This mic is probably made in China (which isn't necessarily bad, but in this case...). My Hornady mic reads a full 0.001 different than my D. caliper. When I checked with a gauge to see which instrument was accurate, it was the caliper. A mic than is a thousandth off is practically useless.

I ageree with another ...

I ageree with another poster who said that instructions are not included. Because instructions were not included is the reason for my grade of this product. Hornady's website does not offer a manual for this product. I recommend ordering the Lyman or RCBS.
