Hornady has taken their Flex Tip Expanding bullet they use in their LEVERevolution and made it available in a projectile only. The patented Flex Tip bullet features an interlocking design that keeps the core of the bullet and the jacket together creating a deeper penetrating, more humane kill. Not only that, they offer controlled expansion, enhanced accuracy and the delivery of flatter trajectories. These bullets are safe to use in all tubular magazines, as well as any other firearm. This is not loaded ammunition.

NOTE: Hornady recommends firing this bullet ONLY from 1 in 20" twist firearms, with approximately a 1998 build date. It will not stabilize properly in older 1 in 38" twist rifles.

I decided to try them for length in my 44 magnum super Redhawk. They fit great and I loaded them on Winchester 296 for the appropriate weight. I would say these would be good performers in a Thompson center .44 mag as well.2nd Review 8/6/2009 5 Stars:Adding to my previous review and in light of another review. Loading of this bullet isn't standard yet for a 44 mag. If you go through the procedure as normal up to the bullet seating step, I used a large rifle sizing die to seat the bullet. I used a .350 rem. but I suspect a 300 win. would work. Be careful to seat them straight because the will not self center using this method. The key for it to work is to have a chamfered starting hole on the rifle die which is crucial not to leave a ring indented in the copper.(seat visually to the crimp ring) Then use your 44 seater die with out the insert to put the crimp (or bullet pull) on the brass. Also when firing them in a six shooter, use 1 at a time or 2 opposite each other in the cylinder, as the cylinder gap flash can melt the rubber tips. It is a longer process but worth the accuracy and performance. Testing the expansion and penetration I shot 100 yards at a clay embankment (sediment clay no rocks), it penetrated 14 inches and expanded to 3/4 of an inch perfectly to the crimp ring. Remaining weight 250 grains or 94% original weight.

I can only give these a Good Rating (3 star) after using them in my TC Encore .444 Marlin. The problems I have with these is first the excessive weight, the .444 can throw them well enough but seems to work better at range and be more accurate with a 240gr bulletThe second and biggest problem I have with these is the Loaded Round Over All Length! Be Ware when loading these as they come out Extremely Looong. Hornady gets around this in there factory .444 Marlin ammo by shortening the case length approx 1/4" I noticed this on my way to the range today when I put a different loaded round beside the Hornady round and instantly spotted the huge difference in the case length. The Hornady Loaded ammo shoots well enough but I'm not sure how useful the brass will be for reloading and with the price of this Brass I would like to be able to reuse brass from factory ammo after I fire it! Loading these in my TC Encore is not a problem with the OAL since it's a single shot, but loading these for a Lever action rifle would be a real challenge due to this extra length. Otherwise though they seem to be a decent enough bullet, I tried a box of these and a box of the .50 cal I used to load my .50 Beowulf and Dessert Eagle .50 A&E, they both ran into the same problem with OAL but once you get around this (if you can) they shoot accurate enough. Personally I think they are a neat idea but I'm gonna stick with the XTP's for my needs. RemMax

I Have an older marlin 444 with 1:38 Twist barrel. I have not had stabilization problems with my gun but you will have to modify the ejector in the gun so that it will cycle properly. I solved the feeding problem by loading a regular flat nose bullet in the magazine tube first. For some reason this causes the rest of the bullets to line up better and then feed nicely.I shot a 240lb mule deer at 218 yards with complete pass through both ribcages. Entrance wound about the size of a nickel and exited about the size of a quarter. No blood shot meat.

I have loaded these for 44mag in 44special brass with HP38 with COL of 1.665. It's not a real hot load but works well in Ruger Super Redhawk on deer..Plus with new 44spc brass you dont have to trim the crap out of them..But the COL WILL NOT FIT IN A 44spc SO DONT TRY IT!!!

I have a neat trick for this one. I use this in my 1892 Puma-Rossi 16" carbine using 44 Special brass. I load them somewhere between a hot 44 special load and a mild 44mag and they work great and don't kick as much as the 44 mags. This is the only way to get them to cycle and feed in the 44 mag Rossi as they are a long bullet above the cannelure. If you put them in 44mag brass they will be too long and you will hang them up when trying to feed (learned the hard way and had to take out the magazine plug and spring to get them out). Or you could load them single from the top if you want the 44 mag punch. I want to try these 44spl loads on deer sometime and will post results. Preliminary groups look good at around 2.5" with peep sights at 100 yards.

I use these in my black diamond 50 cal with the green 44 cal sabots with 100 grains of powder. The accuracy is amazing 2 inch groups at 100 yards with a peep sight mounted as far back as it will go. At 50 yds you can put them in the same hole.

Before considering this product, go to the Hornady website and read, read, read, about using 265 Gr. FTX bullets, AND LEVERevolution ammo in a .444 Marlin! They suggest trimming almost 3/16" off your brass, purchasing a special Magazine follower from the manufacturer, and they DO NOT recommend these bullets in the older 1-38" twist barrels (prior to 1998 manufacture) because they "will not stabilize properly"! It's all there. It would have been nice to have this critical info up front. Or, at least a warning on the box of ammo/bullets! I made an uninformed purchase and now own a box of bullets I can't use.

Wanted to load for 444 marlin only to find out cases need to be trimmed a whole bunch a band saw should work well. Do give credit to Hornady for posting correct load data on their website although cases would be almost useless for any other load. Im not wanting to keep 2 lots of different brass around. Cant tell about performance never fired a single load. Will go back to flat nose bullets

I use the 45 cal in my Smith 460 and the 50 Cal in my Smith 500. If you send RCBS five bullets (they will return them) they will make a bullet seater to fit your bullet.

Just a Follow up on seater plug for this Bullet .444 Dia, if you drill out seater plug deep enough and use from Midway a epoxy mix fill cavity of seater plug take a bullet after spraying with a non stip oil, slide bullet and seater plug back up inside die and with light pressure until its dry (4 hours) sand or grind lightly and you have a home made seater plug for these Hornady bullet and boy they shoot great out of my Ruger Super redhawk....
