I have 2 RCBS smokeless ...

I have 2 RCBS smokeless powder measures and they are excellent quality and perform flawlessly. I bought this powder measure to try to get more consistent black powder throws than I am getting from my Lyman b/p 55. RCBS really botched up their attempt to enter the b/p market with this measure. The adjustment is made by a cam locking mechanism that, on my measure, worked very poorly and there is no way to make a fine adjustment. What I did to correct the problem was to enlarge the hole in the adjustment rod collar to 3/16 inch and replace the spring in the collar retaining assembly with a short piece of brass tubing. You can then use the collar retaining assembly to lock/unlock the adjusting rod. The measure does not come with a baffle and the Lyman baffle I tried to use, would not lock to the side of the powder hopper. However, there is a ridge at the bottom of the hopper and if you bend the baffle to the right size you can use a really long needle nose plier and a stick to push the baffle against this ridge. I had another problem that I can't believe even the least attentive inspector missed. The rotating barrel on the lever of my unit was loose and fell off after a few minutes of use. I corrected this with my lathe by turning a little more length on the retaining pin and, using a punch and hammer, was able to peen the pin so that it would stay in place. The powder level indicator is an aluminum washer with a wooden stick I guess you could argue that it is good enough, but it easily falls apart and a small dab of glue shouldn't be too costly. It is a mystery why RCBS didn't use their tried and true method for adjustment and also let a defective measure out the door. A large percentage of my reloading equipment is RCBS and, until now, I have always considered RCBS to be a quality brand.

Sorry, but this tool is ...

Sorry, but this tool is like so many others by RCBS these days - lacking. I like all the features except the most important one - setting the powder volume to be thrown. It is barely useable as is. The cam action setting is virtually impossible to adjust to within a couple grains of desired, much less the exact volume needed - much worse than the poor ones on the Lyman 55 and Hornady BP measures? I load more than one caliber of BPCR ammo and more than one bullet and powder type in each caliber and find that I cannot set this measure to throw the right amount of powder to fill up the space under the bullet at the OAL length that gives best accuracy. I would like to see RCBS offer a micrometer adjustment screw for this measure. RCBS could have made this measure work the same as the Uniflow measure it's based on and it would have been the best on the market. As it is, you cannot even use Uniflow parts to correct the problem, so it is the worst on the market. I also find I need a Uniflow powder baffle to get uniform volumes of powder, which was not supplied and probably not recommended by RCBS. If you throw underweight charges and trickle up to weight in a scale pan, you will find this measure usable.

I have some likes and dislikes about this product. The adjustment cams are hard to move to get the powder to the correct settings. After it is set it works great.
