In general, Gun Kote was developed mainly for use by the United States Navy Seals. After a series of tests, this thin hard coating was able to withstand over 500 hours of salt spray tests and still meet all military requirements. Today, Gun Kote is used in the shooting sports industry to help protect against corrosion and also to add a unique color to firearms.

The 2400 Series can withstand temperatures over 500 degrees F and as low as -320 degrees F. It can be applied to all ferrous and non-ferrous metals as well as plastic. It's also abrasion resistant and has extremely high heat dissipation. can also be used on magazines.

KG Gun Kote 2400 Series Instructions

Sandblast using 120 grit aluminum oxide at 40lbs of pressure

Degrease using KG-3 Solvent Degreaser (product 558855) and handle parts with gloves to avoid fingerprints and oil contamination

Apply K-Phos Pretreatment for best results (product 112848)

Preheat parts to be coated to about 120 degrees F.

Using a good quality airbrush or spray gun, make light passes 8 to 10 inches away from the part.

Spray four to five passes in different directions to gain complete coverage.

After allowing the coating to dry, bake the part for 1 hour at 325 degrees.

Cleans up with Acetone or MEK

Whenever you get this you will just want to apply it on everything. I got new mags today but they looked more like purple than black. I put this on one of them, you got to love the color outcome, it's so solid. It is a coat so it can still get scratched up, but overall I love it. Recommended to others!

I have been using this product for several months now and I am still convinced that this is the best product. I have used it on several rifles, a shotgun and a pistol. I have read some of the other reviews and I agree, if you do not apply this properly, you will not have good results. The metal needs to be prepared and thoroughly degreased prior to applying the coating. The oven curing for at least an hour and at least at 325F is also a must. One time I got too close in a couple of areas on a receiver with the airbrush when applying the coating and the coating was too thick in those areas. After I oven cured the receiver I noticed that the coating did not look right where I sprayed it too thick and it seemed to not have bonded good to the base metal. So I simply put it back in my blasting cabinet and only blasted those areas that needed to be refinished. I then degreased the receiver sprayed it and oven cured the receiver again. This stuff also needs to be applied properly with an airbrush. I use the cheap hobby airbrushes. If any of you have done automotive painting as I have, you will understand that you need to make sure that things are properly prepared and the conditions are just right for apply coatings. I have fired a few hundred rounds through the Taurus PT99 that I refinished and the coating shows no signs of wear on the rails. Follow the instructions and you will have a durable and good looking finish on your firearm.

TR Gun Kote is the worst- I had my gun professional refinished with Gun Kote. It started to show wear on the first draw from my holster. Soft stuff!

I used this on three Ruger 10/22's. Inside and out on the receiver and trigger group housing. I also did two barrels. I had no problems at all because I followed the instructions. Both aluminum and steel take the finish really well. KG recommends using their phosphate as a pre-treatment on steel. I media blasted with fine grit black beauty which I figured was about 120 grit at just under 40 psi to remove the original finish on the receivers and barrels. The coating goes on thin and even after laying on about 6 coats or so, the receiver and barrel markings were still highly detailed. After oven curing (in the kitchen oven) for just over an hour at 326F, the finish is extremely durable and resists every type of solvent that I have tried. The look is also awesome. The actions work much more smoothly since I coated the inside of the receivers. I shot hundreds of rounds through one 10/22 and there is no signs of wear inside the receiver. I did a test piece and subjected it to abrasion tests and solvent tests. I tried every type of gun solvent that I have and also acetone and lacquer thinner. Nothing I tried will dissolve or soften the finish. If I rub the surface with metal that is either not too hard or sharp, it does not scratch or remove the finish but instead it burnishes the finish if I rub hard enough. A sharp knife tip or scribe will scratch through the surface but so will most professional gun coats scratch with a hard sharp object. I am completely satisfied with this product and have found that it is as good (if not better) in every way as most factory finishes. I highly recommend this great product. I just wished I could find a color chip chart for the other KG 2400 series coatings. But, anyways, the black is definitely black.

I used this on a 1911 and a 22 rifle. Great stuff! I used K-phos first and the finish is extremely tough. This is waaay more durable than Duracoat, and doesn't chip and scratch easily like Cerakote. It's cheap, coats well, looks good, and goes a long way. I applied mine with a cheap airbrush and had no problems whatsoever. It stinks a little while baking, but not as bad as Cerakote.
