I was quite pleased with this book. Normally the articles in these manuals are not that helpful to understanding the mind of the caster. With Mike Ventarino writing most of the articles I feel you can understand casting and its place in reloading. I do wish the manual would have gone farther in including more black powder loades for more of the old calibers. Now I know that there is no real trick to loading black powder just fill the case till there is slight compression of the powder charge by the bullet and you are on your way. But to the people new to these old calibers it would give them an incentive to try black powder and substitutes as they would any of the other powders listed for that bullet. One small ding to the editors for leaving in the 32 S&W long swaged wadcutter load and the 44 Russian 180 grain swaged bullet load. There are molds for these on the market. All in all a good reference to have in your library.

After reading all the reviews I agree that this is not perfect, but as far as I know (which is not much because I'm still learning) this book is a great beginning / intermediate book and would do anyone a lot of good service.

Compared to its predecessors, this is a pretty vanilla-plain manual. Lyman seems to be easing out of the reloading industry, and it shows up in this manual. Look at the 1980 3rd edition, nearly twice as thick, has load information not only on all the then current manufacture molds, but loads for discontinued molds that were (are) still popular. Now they don't even have loads for all the molds they do make. Looking for a 30-30 plinking load with a light bullet? The lightest bullet listed is the 150 grain Lee. Gone are the 110, 123 grain loads. The other thing I noted was that the low and high for many loads is so narrow as to make you wonder why bother. The number of powders tested has generally increased, but the range between highest and lowest is very narrow. Some new cartridges are included, but one looks in vain for old stand buys like the 50-90. Unique has been loaded in 45-70's since it was first made, yet I don't see any such loads. While I like the fact that they include some information on molds of other manufacturers, there are a lot of roads not taken here that are obvious by their omission.

I can't compare it to other editions because this is my first but it is a great source of reloading information for cast bullets. It has tons of background features that are great reading in addition to the reloading information. I only bought this book after going over some reloading questions with a local expert who used it as his main reference.

The book does cover a few non-Lyman molds but leaves out a lot of the current common molds on the market. It has current reload data, but seems to be a step backwards in the amount of information from the 3rd edition

I am highly disappointed ...

I am highly disappointed in this book. Lyman claims it "Includes data for all Lyman Moulds" when it has no data or mention for two of the six Lyman Rifle Moulds that I own so I would guess that there are other Lyman Moulds not included in this book. I contacted Lyman and expressed my disappointment and asked them for the Ballistic Coefficients for bullets made by these two moulds not included in this book and their response was "Sorry we have never developed the BC for these bullets." I also noticed that there is no data for calibers such as 50-90 and 50-140 so I am sure there are other calibers not included in this book. I would not buy this book without first looking at a copy of it to ensure that the caliber and specific bullet moulds you are interested in are included in this book.
