Drop in part means leave the file in the tool box, it drops right in. A quality product and very easy to install. Just be sure you look at where the spring for the bolt release goes before you push the top pin out (no, I don't know what that pin is called which tells you how easy it is). Function is flawless and a lot more fun.

I really hated to give this a low review score. But the part I received did require some file work to get the pin to fit correctly. It was not a hard thing to do but required a small, less than 1\8 inch round file to do it. After that was done everything else was 5 STAR. I called Midway customer service and they said the matter would be looked into with Volquartsen. The Technical Specifications & Use sheet does say EASY DROP-IN installation.

This is an essential update to my 10/22 Takedown. My wife and daughter were having trouble using the factory bolt release, but this fixed it! I also put in the Volquartsen Exact Edge ejector (used the stock spring) which cured the odd FTE's that were happening with the stock ejector. I swapped out the metal bolt stop for the poly recoil buffer and now it runs perfect and quiet!

Works great. As others have said, I don't know why Ruger doesn't provide this from the factory. Installation took 5 minutes. I'd advise ignoring the installation instructions and just study it for a minute. The directions call for removing the hammer and this is completely unnecessary. Once your remove the 2 pins that go through the bolt release latch, you can swivel the spring that's wrapped around the hammer pin out of the way without removing the hammer pin. Following the instructions would have made the install much more complex.

Although I am familiar with the trigger group of the 10-22 I appreciated the instructions that came with this product. If you are not familiar with your 10-22's inner components, print Midway's exploded view or use Ruger's for assistance. This is the simplest .22 semi auto in existence and is not hard to learn. Time spent on the exchange of parts was no more than 5 minutes. The fit and functioning of this part is flawless. I look forward to using other Volquartsen products on this old 10-22.
