I think it is a great device for the price, I agree though that more instructions would have been useful, and I hope to find something to carry it in to protect it, but overall a very good buy. The product information card that comes with it states battery not included, so I went and bought battery for it, opened it up to insert it and low and behold there was already a battery in it.

I received one of the Caldwell instruments as a gift. Worked fine for one trip then quit working. I sent an e-mail to the Caldwell folks about this hoping only to get information on repair. Today I received a new unit. I could not be more pleased. This was customer service above and beyound. Caldwell is on the top of my "A" list.

UPDATE from 2009: I have had this unit now for a few years and have gotten to use it in hunting and shooting situations. I have also used it against two different models of Kestrel wind meters. Here is what I have concluded:1. For $30 for the Caldwell, you get a unit that will perform for you. I compared the wind readings on the Caldwell unit to that on the Kestrels. They all say the same thing + or - .5MPH. However, the propeller on the Kestrels is far more sensitive and spins more freely.2. The thermometer on both the Kestrels and Caldwell appears to read the same. However, one needs to remember that the best way to get a temp reading is to pick it up and let it sit in the wind. I have found that on both units, if you lay them down on the ground, on a vehicle hood, ect, you will get very big false readings.3. The display on the Caldwell leaves alot to be desired. The Kestrels are spot on.4. From my experience, it doesn't matter what wind meter you are using. If you do not have the propeller positioned properly in the wind, you will not get the most accurate reading.5. The caldwell unit has been in some rough conditions with me and it has not broke or malfunctioned. However, it could really use some kind of cover.6. At least for me, the battery life has been decent- depending on how much you use it.7. Setting up the Caldwell is not as user friendly as the Kestrels. But, with some patience, it get set up easily enough.Overall, I the unit has perfomed good for me, and for the price compared to it's capabilities, it gets 4 stars. Kestrel wins in overall performance though.

I can sum this thing up ...

I can sum this thing up in one word, JUNK! I could spit in the wind and it would work just as well. To start, it seems every time I get it out of my shooting bag the battery is dead. Then I put a new one in and if you want to switch it from metric/standard you have to have some kind of small needle like tool to poke in the back to get it to change. Then when you do finally get it working it doesn't even work well. If it isn't blowing 5mph or so it will not even work. I would suggest spending a few more bucks and buying something that actually works. I would have smashed mine on more than one occasion if I would have had a hammer with me. To sum it up I think it is all around garbage.

Worked for about 10 seconds. Checked batter on volt meter and good at 3V. Replaced battery with new battery checked good on volt meter. No good on new battery. This is a hunk of junk I am returning. DONT BUY.

I purchased this last year to aid with long range shooting. The unit works, but it is not nearly as useful as I had hoped. It takes a decent breeze before this will pick it up, and the changes in gusts are hard to determine. I think I've used it a total of 3-4 times since I determined I could do just as well at distance by looking at the grass/trees bending.

Works in winds 3+ MPH, ...

Works in winds 3+ MPH, but pretty much useless in slower wind speed. Put a drop of WD-40 on the turbine and it starts easier, but still not accurate. Wind direction effects the readings greatly, if you are off by 15-20 degrees it is very inaccurate. Had the same problem with the battery until I figured I was putting the battery backwards. Not the best unit out there but beats guessing. On the positive side, it is very sturdy, I've dropped it, sat on it, got it wet, and used in 110 + degrees with failure.

Great product for the price. I noticed the propeller must be a little off balance because when it is near stopping the blades rotate back like one of them are heavier than the others. No big deal though and doesn't appear to affect reading. Only wish it came with a case of some sort. Held it out the window going down interstate and it read wind speed close to my ground speed so that was pretty impressive.
