Hornady has taken their Flex Tip Expanding bullet they use in their LEVERevolution and made it available in a projectile only. The patented Flex Tip bullet features an interlocking design that keeps the core of the bullet and the jacket together creating a deeper penetrating, more humane kill. Not only that, they offer controlled expansion, enhanced accuracy and the delivery of flatter trajectories.

These bullets are safe to use in all tubular magazines, as well as any other firearm. This is not loaded ammunition.

During the 2008 deer ...

During the 2008 deer season, I used Barnes 300gr TSX bullet in my 458 Socom going at 1700/fps using Reloader #7. Bullets were accurate, but over penetrated and lacked preferred expansion. For the 2009 deer season, I am switching to Hornadys 325gr FTX bullet. By changing to H110, I increased my MuzVel to 1945/fps and gained 25 additional grains in bullet weight. Both loads give me touching groups of 3 at 100 yards. Using the dry phonebook test at 100 yards between the two bullets, Barnes stopped at 8.25" with limited expansion and a cylindrical wound channel. Hornady stopped at 6.875" with and explosive wound channel starting at about 1.75" continuing to the end. Copper jacket did separate more than I expected, however, it is my feeling that the deer will absorb all the energy and drop in its tracks verses the pass thru shots I was getting for my Barnes loads. I will post feedback at the conclusion of the 2009 deer season.UPDATE (11/24): For the 2009 Deer Season, this bullet has been field tested and approved. Results: 4 shots/4 kills. All shots between 35-55 yards. All shots passed through the heart and lung vital area. All deer ran between 25-45 yards. I saw each one go down, no tracking required. Blood trails were distinct and easy to follow nevertheless. Chest cavities turned into Jell-O. I would highly recommend this bullet for deer hunting in a 458 SOCOM. I plan to stick with it for now. Need to test on a couple deer out at the 100-125 yard range to be sure this is the ONE!

With a compressed ...

With a compressed smokeless charge, these long bullets do not load correctly in the Hornady cases. Hornady cases are shorter than normal 45-70 cases, meaning the powder charge ends up closer to the case mouth. (I have read that Hornady shortened the cases to accommodate this bullet.) The bullet tip permanently distort due to the pressure needed to seat the bullet over the compressed charge. Nor will LEVERevolution bullets fully seat in a Remington case. A Remington case has a cannelure about a quarter ways down the case. (The cannelure prevents Remington bullets from sliding back into the case when they are under pressure in a tubular lever action magazine.) The LEVERevolution bullet partially seats, then stops once it contacts the cannelure - it can seat no further. Any further pressure simply distorts the bullet tip.

Love the accuracy. I shot two in one hole and the third of the first three was touching the other two. MARLIN GUIDE. Ruger#1 shot equally well but did not have to do speciaized trimming.Thanks Hornady for keeping the 45/70 alive and well.

Used this in my 458 Win Mag with a light load of 4198. I got a 1/2 group (5 shots) at one hundred yards 3 inches above dead center, another five dead on at 200 yards. Great bullets, fly fast and made my elephant gun a good 200 yard shooter.

I shot a bull bison at ...

I shot a bull bison at 220 yards, (Winchester single shot Lyman tang sight Williams front fire sight) the bullet went through the left horn about an inch from the head and went along the entire length of the spine and exited the rump making a palm size exit hole. The bull went about 40 yards to scrub oak. The sun had set when I made my first shot and we had been after him for 15 hours while he hid out in the brush. He was headed slowly back to a brush covered ravine and I shot him 3 more times which seems excessive but it was getting dark fast and I did not want to dig him out of that ravine in the dark. He went down after 10 steps. When we opened him up he had bled out internally. Any one of the shots were fatal. This bullet will do the job.

These bullets shoot great ...

These bullets shoot great in my Marlin 1895 in 450 Marlin with a 22" barrel. My handloads chronograph at just over 2200 fps with H4198 and about 2220 with A2230. Both shoot equally accurate. My first kill with these bullets was a smaller hog. When I went to check the performance of the bullet I found 3 dead hogs. The second kill was an average sized sow hog and she dropped where she stood. Great accuracy and great killing performance. They are a bit tricky to reload. Hornady should make a special seating die for this bullet. If you have a 45-70 or 450 Marlin with which you are not satisfied give these bullets a try. I believe they will bring new life to your gun.

If you are new to handloading and you have a lever gun, you are going to hate these. Not exactly a fun time when you have too trim your cases and grind your dies down so the bullets will fit in your gun. I have a whole box of them that I will not use. Again, not for beginners.

I used these FTX bullets in my Marlin 1895, 22" bbl. Although not as accurate as my handloads (350 gr RN interlocks) they group 1.5" at 100 yds. These bullets took two deer quickly, shredding the heart of one.

I used these bullets in my Marlin 450 Guide Gun for the 2010 deer season. My load consisted of AA-1680 powder at a velocity of 2,000 FPS. I am getting 1.5" groups at 100 yards. I shot a large doe at 60 yards with this load and the bullet performed perfectly! I hit her in the front right shoulder and the bullet exited just in front of the left rear leg. The bullet created a lot of damage to the shoulder and internal organs. One thing to keep in mind when loading these bullets. You will need to trim your bass .060" so the loaded rounds will cycle through the action. A little bit of a pain but more than well worth in the end!

In 2009 I reviewed the new (2 ring) Barnes 300 gr spitzer. I liked its older bro running 2350 fps (as I recall) but at 2750fps I didn't get as good result on whitetail deer (trouble recovering 3 deer). So much so that in '09 got a box of these 325 FTX but didn't finish load development (completed the season w/the old .270win) until the 2010 season was on me. According to my consumer grade chrono, it runs ~2650fps as I recall from '09, using an undisclosed Hodgdon powder/load in a CZ 550 SC .458wm. This year when I finished up the process, they would tear paper hole-to-hole @100 yards when using a familiar weighted full-rest. This morning I took an 8pt shooter and the Hornady FTX didn't disappoint. In a quartering-to shot it went in the shoulder and continued diagonally ending up against the inside of the hide with a rib or 3 to spare. (yea I know, not a preferred shot but he was a shooter & 2 of the other bucks that walked in w/him bolted when they reached my stand - he was further behind when he froze). The recovered bullet weighed 193gr on my power scale (i.e. ~59%). It was a pretty little mushroom. This bullet was not designed for this speed so I can't fault it for dropping some weight. This thing (Hornady 325 FTX) dumped every bit in that game animal.

I just tried this bullet ...

I just tried this bullet in my .50 cal front stuffer, using MMP's HPH orange (.457-.458" bullet to .50 bore) sabot and Blackhorn 209 powder. I have never had 3 holes touch at 100 yards before with a muzzleloader, but I got there in 4 out of 7 groups with this combination. I don't have a chrono but according to Blackhorn's load data chart, this should be giving me a hair under 2,000 f.p.s. so I expect terminal performance to rival .45-70 shooters' observations. I still love Barnes' T-EZ but at about a buck per bullet, switching to this Hornady offering gives me more mass, better accuracy, and saves me 40 cents per shot after figuring in shipping for bullets & sabots, offset by sales tax savings over my local Barnes source. MUCH better external performance than the Hornady SST-ML, and other users' reviews detailing terminal performance make this my new do-all load for North American big game.
