If you're wanting to learn more about the art of sniping, this is the first of three books that I recommend you read. This military manual will tell you all of the basics you need to know. Reading this first will help you get a basic understanding of the sniper's mindset, mission, and tactics, which you can then build from with further study. However, as anyone who has spent time reading military manuals can tell you, the illustrations look like someone gave pencils to a bunch of 5-year-olds and told them them to start drawing (no offense to 5-year-olds). Likewise, you get pure data. There is no time spent trying to make it interesting or putting in a little humor to illustrate a point, it's just pure, dull and mostly boring data. Also there are two distinct errors in this manual (and several other military manuals) and I'm far from the only person who knows they exist. First, higher humidity doesn't make the air "thicker" or "heavier." Actually it makes the air "thinner" to the bullet. Instead of boring you with molecular weights, just trust me. Also, a change in humidity does not have a 1-MOA effect as the manual claims. Unless you shoot in excess of 1,200 yards at very small targets, you can forget about humidity. Secondly and most importantly, an oblique wind at 45-degrees to the line of sight is not a half-value wind, it is basically a 3/4 value wind. A wind from 30-degrees would be more like a half-value wind. Even with the terrible illustrations and errors, I still think this should be the starting point for those wanting to learn about sniping. The two others are "The Ultimate Sniper" and "The Complete .50-Caliber Sniper Course" also sold by Midway.

This manual provides a comprehensive source for specialized rifle engagement of long range targets as well as a wealth of field knowledge applicable to hunting and range shooting, as well as military applications. The material is covered in depth and well explained. The only shortfall is that illustrations are typical field manual grade (marginal quality). A great single source reference.
