This highly functional camp hatchet stores easily and causes minimal fatigue to wrist, elbow and shoulder because of its light weight. Outstanding hawk for ...

Outstanding hawk for throwing. If you intend to actually use this tomahawk, good luck finding something better for the price. If you want it shaving sharp, put a shaving sharp edge on it yourself. I like to remove the set screw, fill the hole in the handle (that the screw creates) with wood glue or wood filler, and rasp/sand until the head sits higher on the handle. Then soak the handle, with the head on it (tight), for about 30 minutes in water. This will keep your hawk tight and ready for plenty of abuse, but I still keep extra handles on standby.

First, a tomahawk will never be an ax, if you want an ax buy an ax. I throw hawks and knives in competition, for me the Cold Steel Frontier Hawk is the best hawk there is for throwing. These are the lightest high quality hawks, I have found. Most reproduction hawks have a tapered handle that holds the head on when throwing the hawk. This is good, because all you have to do to change a handle is push the handle out of the taper and push in another handle. I have broken or split three handles in an afternoon of practicing. (I throw hard) These handles are made of well cured hickory, they are tough but they will split when you stick one hawk in the handle of another. If you're a buying a hawk to throw buy an extra handle or two, I buy six spare handles at a time. If you are just going to look at your Frontier hawk or use it for a hatchet, do not bother. The thing that makes these hawks hold an edge so well is how they are tempered. The head of these hawks is soft tempered to handle the stress of the throwing and the impacts with other hawks. The edge is tempered medium hard to hold an edge. I keep all of my competition and working hawks shaving sharp with minimal effort. Do not forget, these are fighting tools. I would take my Frontier hawks to war before I would take any of my fancy carbon fiber wonder hawks which are worthless if they are broken and have to order parts to get one working again. I give Cold Steel an A++ for the Fontier Hawk.

After some time with this tomahawk I've upgraded my review. When it first arrived I was very disappointed with the quality. The head was so loose that the blade would pivot up and down about 1/8". It was enough that it had created a gouge in wood handle. After I disassembled the tomahawk, sanded the gouges out of the handle and sharpened the blade I reinstalled the head tightly (it has a set screw in the back to keep it in place). Since then it has worked perfectly!I'd give this item 1 star for initial assembly quality, but with 30 minutes of work it was just what I was looking for.

I purchased this traditional style hawk for my son as a gift. You can't buy a better one for the money. I can't help but laugh when people complain about a loose head or dings in the handle. Traditional hawks are made to fit a conical shaped handle so the head can be easily removed for scraping hides etc. The handle will surely receive some dings if its used as intended, This is a tool meant for rugged use. This one will take it.

I was very disappointed with this product. To begin with the head does not fit the handle. It is loose enough that it rattles. Loose enough that the blade can pivot up and down a full 1/8". Yes, I can pull the set screw out, pound the head down and reset the set screw, but I shouldn't have to do that with a brand new product.

For what looks like a cheap throwing tomahawk or something easily forgotten and thrown away, I have been amazed by the versatility of this tool. I have used it for throwing, quartering wood, clearing brush, hammered tent pegs, and with a re-sharpened edge (also easy to sharpen and holds a good edge), it is an excellent general cutting tool. The finish on the head is very durable, and the hickory handle has held up to several overstrikes and other punishment. Puts some of my other axes to shame considering its size. I would recommend this to anyone!

Very nice 'hawk, ...

Very nice 'hawk, especially for the money. Throws very nicely, and has enough heft for chopping tasks around the camp. I was a little leary of the painted finish, but it seems to be holding up quite well, no chips or friction wear yet. Alltogether a highly recomended product!
