Technical Information

Newer Remington shotguns use an internal ratchet system to hold the magazine cap in place.

If your shotgun has the internal ratchet system cap, you need to drill out the dimple on the guns magazine tube with a 3/16"drill bit in order to fit the extension to the tube.

I installed this product in less than an hour and i am happy with the finished result.
It did not get 5 stars because the finish is a bit different than the gun and the sling strap could be a bit more substantial, but it works.
The installation requires a bit of tweaking on the gun and the spring should be cut down a bit.
Overall, with a 20" slug barrel and the extension, the gun looks beefed up and in my opinion it looks the way a shotgun should look.

I received this and installed it in less than 10 minutes in a 21" Express Magnum receivered youth shotgun. The gun's magazine tube had no dimples to drill out. I used the spring at its shipped length and the new follower. I then easily loaded 7 dummies and rapidly cycled them through several times with no misfeeds or other problems. I think I'll try shooting it as is before making any modifications. The barrel is 1" longer than the tube and looks sharp.2 caveats: The spring will take off if you don't pay attention and there were no instructions of any sort included. If you are nervous or hesitant to work on your guns, be sure to look online for the procedure for installing this and the extra work you may have to do.

Put this on an 870 I was turning "tactical". Basically I installed this, then measured the barrel so I had approximately 1/2" in front of the tube, then cut it down, finished the end, drilled and tapped for a new front bead, then Cerama-coated the barrel, magazine tube, this new extension, and the receiver. Finished length of the barrel was exactly 20-1/2". This is a good product, and as advertised turns your stock 4+1 870 into a 7+1 shot unit. Buy some 1-3/4" mini-shells and your capacity becomes 12!

My Notes:1. The 3-Round extension is for a 20" barrel. Use the 2-Round version an 18" barrel. 3-Gun shooters will want to go with the +5 extension for 26"+ barrels.2.When the other reviewers here are talking about "cutting the spring" to make it fit, they mean they need to clip 1/3 of the total length in order to make room for the 8th round in the mag tube for the +3 extension. If you don't do this, you'll find that you'll only be able to load two extra rounds into the mag (7 total). This is due to the fact that the same spring is also used in the +2 extension (which provides a very strong spring/feed). You'll want to "clip & test" a few times to make sure you get as much spring as you can to insure the strongest positive feeding.3. The sling stud does not free swivel/spin (since it's actually the end of the screw holding the clamps on).4.The sling loop will have to be removed with a pair of pliers and the stud drilled out with a sharp 9/64th bit if you want to use a QD locking swivel.5. The extension is coated with a dark oil that you might want to scrub off with a few liberal WD40 hose-downs and shop rag wipe-downs.6. The instructions state that the spring pressure will wear down and the spring will need to be replaced over time if you keep the gun loaded all the time. Good luck finding spare springs!My take: In a tactical engagement, there is no such thing as "too many" rounds in a shotgun! $40 is a cheap price to pay for 60% more ammo supplied by this high quality tube.

I would have given more stars, but this product requires too much alteration to get it to work properly. I had to cut about 8-10 inches off the spring for it to hold the 3 extra rounds. Also the diameter of the follower has to be reduced for it to slide smoothly in the magazine tube. Even so, I found my gun's original factory follower worked far better with this, so don't throw yours away.

Good product and simple to install. I found that after drilling the dimples out I filed the dimple area with a round file to smooth out the inside of the magazine tube. I have no hang ups and feeding is much smoother. Hope this helps.

The parkerized model is a good color match for the matte blue of the 870 express model. I had to drill out the dimples on my shotgun, no big deal. Also, I had to shave the magazine follower to keep it from binding. The magazine spring is VERY robust and three hands are helpful when assembling for the first time. Overall I am happy with the magazine tube.

The finish matches the ...

The finish matches the Remington express finish exactly. Wipe it down with break free and a cotton rag to even out the parkerizing. The spring looked like a 9 year old made it, but it functions fine. I had to cut and reform the spring ends to get it to fit the follower and tube corectly. The follower needed to have .020 taken off the OD to get it to slide freely in the mag tube.Once all the fitting was done the kit is really great. It works and looks really good.Oh, and the sling swivel clamp is trash. No fault of Choate, because they all seem to use the same garbage design, but someone needs to come up with a better design for these swivel clamps!

So far so good. The sling attachment/clamp stripped out, and is a bit of a paint to install, but otherswise the product is fine. Matches the finish of the 870 almost perfectly.After installing the mag ex, I put 121 rounds through it, a mix of slugs, #4, #1, and #00 buck, and bird shot. No feeding problems whatsoever.I think the Wilson/Scattergun extension has a sturdier sling mount, but they only make it in 1 or 2 shot extension.The Choate is a 3 shot extension and installed is exactly the same length as my 20" barrel.I would recommend the product to anyone, and it would have received 5 stars with a better sling mount.
