Copper cups crimp onto the base of cast bullets to protect them from the hot, burning gases that propel the bullet out of the barrel. Also aids in the reduction of fouling by keeping less lead from being melted in the barrel.

I like these gas checks a lot. I bought one box of checks, a .309 Lee sizer to crimp them on, and a 150 grain LEE .309 mould. This gas check crimps on to the base of the Lee bullets firmly. I use them for cheap plinking ammo.

A rare instance of cheaper being better. I have used over 10,000 of these in the last four years on over a dozen different 30 caliber molds and I have found them to be extremely uniform in weight, not merely in each box but from lot to lot. They work much better than the slip-on type, The only problem that I have had involved an RCBS Mold with a very large shank on the end of the bullets that precluded me from easily seating the gas checks. I finally sent the mold back and got an exchange. The Hornady gas checks work perfectly with bullets cast from the new mold.
