This die is great for military brass. I have de-primed hundreds of military 5.56mm brass with it so far. It is also great if you like to de-prime before you tumble your brass, but you don't want to dirty up your resizing/decapping die with dirty brass.

This depriming die is very well made. The depriming pin is very strong but designed to give if an obstinate primer is about to break it. I was able to install the die in my press and start depriming cases immediately. I am very pleased with the die and will use it extensively. Buy with confidence.

GREAT Decapping Die for the money. I've de-primed 1,000's of shells with mine already and bought 2 extra pins following the advice given here: Don't buy extras, pin is very strong. Loosen the nut on the top a little to ensure it works as it's supposed to and dislodges the pin from the die in order to keep it from breaking.

Easily the most-used die I have. I use it to deprime .223, .308, .30-30, .30-06, 9mm, .40, .45, .38 Special, .357 Magnum, and other cartridges prior to tumbling them. Since it doesn't touch the case, it doesn't need case lube or clean cases. I've easily deprimed several hundred cases per hour with my Lee Challenger press. I had previously purchased an RCBS depriming die, and it broke a pin within the first 100 rounds (a berdan primed case bent the pin, I straightened it, and a crimped primer snapped it later) -- the Lee die (at half the price of the RCBS one) is essentially unbreakable -- any berdan cases or other obstructions simply push the pin up out of the collet. It's easy to examine the case in question then tap the pin back down with a small hammer. Sure beats breaking pins! Even though this Lee die is half the price of the competitors, it's much better constructed and will easily outlast any competition; I highly recommend it.

This is the most useful die I own. I like to clean my brass after decapping, but before sizing. I can run any case, no matter how dirty through this die to free up the primer pocket. The collet that holds the decapping pin must be tightened VERY tight to decap military crimped primers, but two wrenches take care of it easily, and it won't move unless you hit a major obstruction (something other than a boxer primer); then it just pushes up like it is supposed to and you reset the die.

I'm one of these reloaders who likes to decap all my brass and clean it before I re-size it, and this tool is awesome for that job. I broke the very first one of these I bought. Had a whole crate of .223 to decap and the first one I picked was the only berdan primed case in the pile. I bought another and was going to toss the broken one (after all, it was my stupidity that broke it), but my wife sent it off to Lee and they replaced it at no cost. Great company with great products.

Excellent tool! Strong! Works! A time saver for me I can take a assortment of brass and deprime them all without slowing down. I was doing some brass and missed a berdan primed piece (oops!) it punched on through with no breaking! And when faced with obstruction it functioned flawless and pushed out the top cleared and adjusted the collet and was back in the running in no time. An excellent tool highly recommended for anyone who uses range brass.

Excellent Product! I use it on a Dillon 650 Progressive Press with a case feeder. Broke the first decapping pin about 5 minutes in (glad I ordered a spare). It was my fault! READ THE INSTRUCTIONS ABOUT SETTING THE COLLET TENSION. If properly set the pin does not break, it slides up in the collet. The die does not touch the walls of the case, so you can run dirty brass through with out fear of scoring the die or the case. I now decap fired brass then tumble it - cleans out the primer cup. I use the regular decapper on the sizing die at load time to make sure there is no media stuck in the flash hole.

I was a little "leery" of this product when I bought it because it was so cheap. Easily the best $7.95 I have spent on a reloading tool. I have used this decapping die on everything from .223 Rem up to the Ultra mags. I have never had one problem with it, and it has saved me a lot of time when prepping my cases for the Tumbler. If you load a large number of cases as I do than you owe it to yourself to get one of these tools. My hats off to Lee for keeping the price very reasonable on their products.

I use it in a separate press all the time and love it. Just be sure to buy a few extra rods right now-- eventually, after about 3,000 strokes, I didn't notice and didn't seat a military crimped case and it snapped the pin. Big time saver especially if you use it as a separate stand-alone station.

I thought "oh great, I broke it". there had been a 40 case stuck inside the 454. All that happened was the decapping pin got pushed up in its collet. No bent pin or anything. A great tool before you polish.

Excellent decapper. Will not dirty since it does not size. Cheap and convenient since I decap before I clean my cases. I removed the decapping pin on my sizing die so I can use primed brass. For old cases, priming is done with the Auto Prime II on my separate turret. When I load onto the 3 hole turret, I can use the auto index to produce rounds continuously w/o removing the shell from the holder - size, flare/charge, bullet seat/crimp. Pretty convenient!

Worth every penny - decapping pin is a good solid one. I have bottomed it against the case web pretty strongly a few times (my mistake) and the pins showed no signed of deformation. Works on pistol and rifle. Machining is a tad (very slightly) rough - it is an $8 hunk of steel after all and the case is kind of cheap, but I don't care - this thing is going to last a lifetime. It even has a pressure relief - if the pin is stressed to much, it is supposed to push up through the head of the die and can be reset by the user. Buy this - you won't be disappointed.

I was using the RCBS universal depriming die for a few years. I ended up breaking over a dozen depriming pins in my RCBS depriming die and it was made even worse when I started depriming military surplus brass with crimped primers. After reading about the Lee depriming die, I bought and feel that this die is superior to the RCBS counterpart. The stem design is sound, and if the primer is 'stuck', the decapping pin wont' bend, but rather, it will be pushed up with the stem through the top of the collet. But I have yet to have this happen and I have yet to break pin in this die, either. I highly recommend this die over the RCBS die. I still like RCBS products, but in this case, Lee beats out RCBS.

Very easy to use and very durable. Fit and finish is pretty good. Lock-ring worked no prob. Tension on collet was preset and didn't need any adjustment.

I clean my cases (I have to because my wife bought me Hornady M2 as a surprise present, great wife eh!) so I deprime before resizing. This thing and a Lee hand press allow me to sit in front of the tube while I deprime brass. I took all the decapping pins out of my loading dies because I also prime brass with the Lee hand press (much better feel, less hand stress which, for me, is important. Getting old sucks). I did break a decapping pin trying to dislodge a crimped in primer. The pin DID NOT release as advertised. Still, it's a very handy tool and less expensive than the competitor's equivalent (which would also have broken, I am sure, that primer was crimped AND sealed/glued/welded in). So, if you clean your brass after depriming, do yourself and your sizing dies a favor and get one of these along with a Lee hand press so you can watch idiot box while you do the boring job of punching out primers.

Bought a Lyman decapping die first, then discovered the Lee. I then bought a Lee. The Lee decapper is the best. If you adjust the collet properly, it will release the pin if it hits an obstruction. I have a Loadmaster and use the decapping die in the first station. Have several turrets all set up in different pistol calibers, each with a Lee decapper die in #1. Buy some spare decapping pins as you will break one every now and then.

Yes, it's great to deprime without resizing prior to tumble cleaning cases as many people have mentioned, and I've used the Lee Universal Decapping Die for that, but I have an even better application. For progressive pistol loading on the Lee LoadMaster press (possibly others), remove the resizing and decapping die from station one, remove the decapping pin and reinstall the resizing die in station two where priming occurs on the upstroke. Resizing in station two does an excellent job of centering the brass over the priming mechanism (much better than the loose fitting shell plates that accept a few different calibers), and it also pushes the brass down onto the shell plate while the brass is being primed which also eliminates any vertical slop in the shell plate. The result is more reliable and more precise priming. With the resizing being done in station two, you still need to push out the spent primer in station one, so you install this nice Lee Universal Decapping Die in station one. Excellent. This is one of the many Lee products that leaves me wondering how they can manufacture such a high quality product at such a low price.

Works great, as everyone notes. Using this for all decapping lets you raise the neck expander balls on your resizing dies to the position where your press exerts its greatest leverage, reducing the force you have to apply and smoothing the stroke.

What a great product! After snapping several RCBS decapping pins on crimped .223 brass...I figured it was time for a new plan. This baby screws right into the Rockchucker and you're ready to go. I think sometimes it scares the primers out of the case! I attempted to push a Berdan primer once(not on purpose!), it pushed the pin up as designed - no harm, no foul. 5 out 5 from me.

As mentioned, most of what I have used it for was military crimped primers (223), but also used it for 200+/- 45ACP. This is an excellent product that is almost fool-proof.

Decapping pin shaft (diameter = 0.202") fits 20 cal case mouth, but not by much. Case heads need to be well lined up on shell holder, or non-tapered shaft could mar case mouth. Overall, a high quality tool!

Works great for decapping pistol 9mm, 45 acp, 44mag, 480 Ruger etc. Does not size so no need to tumble the bullets. I also bought 1 more universal decapper and converted it to a powder check die. Remove the decapping pin and replace it with a 3/16" x 4" stainless rod. Add a stop collar on one end of the rod (Dillon’s small plastic primer pick-up tip works fine - the yellow one). Insert the rod in the collet nut. Adjust the stop collar such that the other end is about flush with the die entrance. You will see that the rod moves freely in the collet nut so when a charged case is inserted in the die it raises the rod. You can adjust the die up or down to indicate over, under or no charge. Great for verifying charges in a progressive!! Just make sure to wipe the rod end with degreaser or alcohol before use to avoid powder sticking. Lee universal die is very versatile!!

I ordered one of these to decap range brass that I don't have dies for yet and it works just as advertised. I ordered a second decapping pin just in case I broke the first one, but that was an unneeded gesture since the design of the die prevents you from breaking the pin in the first place. I've decapped lots of military .223, .308, and .45 with crimped in primers with this die with no problem whatsoever. If the pin is ever in danger of breaking while decapping, it will slip through a collet in the die instead of snapping. Excellent design deserving of 5 stars.

This is great for decapping crimped primers. The instructions say the collet that holds the pin might need a lot of torque and once I got it tight enough, I haven't had to reset the pin since. Cases can be dirty when ran through this die, so they get cleaned after depriming, and then the primer pocket needs just a little touch to clean out the worst of the residue. A great product at a great value if you have any crimped primer brass to process.

What can I say about this? It works, and works well. I've been using mine for so long I can't even remember when I bought it. But, I do remember ordering a spare rod, though I've never needed it. I only reload my own brass, which I know are not military. However, if you did encounter a stray crimped in military primer, that didn't want to come out, the decapping rod will slide up, as apposed to breaking. Don't over tighten the rod to prevent this, or the rod can break. (I've never had this happen, but I've heard of it)

Mine worked fine with no adjustment out of the box, but if I ever have a problem with it in the future, I'd like some instructions to fix it.

After reading these reviews, I bought the decapper and two spare pins. I liked the concept that the pin would push up if it hit a berdan primer. Started decapping 30-06 mil brass and hit a berdan after about 10th case. The pin shattered. Dummy me, didn't check the case (thought I just didn't have in all the way). Put in a new pin and shattered it, too. Now I check all my brass first. Have decapped about 200 mil crimped 30-06 and nearly 1,000 mil crimped 45ACP with no problems. I sent a letter to Lee along with a photo of the two shattered pins and they sent me two replacements for free. I even admitted that I attempted to punch the berdan primer. So, they do stand by their guarantee that the pin is unbreakable. I can live with caution about berdan primers. Hence, I only gave 4 stars.

Nice product. I have used it for many different cartridges and have yet to break the decapping pin. Have used it for 4 years. I gave it 4 stars since it is too short for some of the monster mags, but as a whole, works great for all standard cartridges .. 223 through 30-06.

I use this die to deprime all my brass; including military surplus brass. I broke the pin once when accidently trying to deprime a Berdan primed case (wasn't checking). The collet was too tight from the factory and would not allow the pin to move. I purchased two replacement pins and replaced the broken pin. I have not had a problem since. I use the spare depriming pin to clean corn cob and walnut media out of the primer pockets. It works way better than a paperclip and is much stronger. A great die I would have given 5 stars if the collet had been adjusted better at the factory. I would recommend purchasing one of the replacement pins.

Got it to put in a hand press to deprime where ever I feel like it. Works nice and it's strong too. Had it in the RC and I slammed it down a few cases. I stuck in too fast and it bottomed out hard, but no damage to case or deprimer whatsoever. It doesn't center cases, but it does it's job nicely.

worked like it was suppose to before I messed it up. The other guys are right, read the instructions before you use it. After about 15 cases the pin pushed up (like it was suppose to do) and I thought the collet was loose.I overtightned it and after about 15 more cases the pin broke because it could not push up into the collet like it was designed to do. I have ordered 2 replacement pins and will read the instructions before I begin again. Good product.

It does quite well. My only problem is if the alignment is off the decapping rod will kink the case mouth. I'd grind a better taper on it to solve the problem.

Easy to use, but have to make sure it lines up w/ case neck first. Used it on .308 with no problems. I used it for .223, did fine for about 100 rounds of Winchester cartridges. Then started doing a box of Federal, and the pin stuck in a flash hole. Got it out, seemed to force fit back into the larger pin holder okay, but pulled out 3 cartridges later. Gave up on it. I'll try another before going to a different brand.

A decapping pin held solely by friction? It is very difficult to tighten the locking system so that the primer doesn't just push the pin up so that that nothing is accomplished. And we broke 2 of the pins within 25 pieces of range 223 brass.
