The Lyman 1200 DPS 3 is an electronic powder scale and automatic powder dispenser combined into one convenient unit. It stores up to 100 pet loads with easy recall by cartridge, specific powder and weight. No powder calibration is required, and it dispenses powder quickly with accuracy to +/- 1/10 grain.

With a 1200 grain capacity, the system can be used as a scale, complete dispensing system or a scale and powder trickler. It's also compatible with PC Interface Software (sold separately) which allows you to transfer memory directly from a personal computer to the DPS system. The Interface also has an electronic reloader's log for storing all of your reloading information.

The 1200 DPS 3 is powered by an AC adapter that is included in the box. Please note this is not for use with blackpowder.

Outstanding product. This is a great improvement of the old hand trickler once used. This isn't the fastest in the world, but when you are reloading for accuracy patience must be exercised anyway. When you first set it up go ahead and install the smaller plug in the dispenser arm, otherwise you will get an overcharge, but the scale will tell you it's wrong anyway, without the plug powder continues to flow as the exit hole is large enough to allow loose powder to continue to fall when the trickler stops. Yes this does slow things down a bit but once it's done it is very consistent. Whatever your load is under load it by 0.1 grains and keep a toothpick handy, when it stops dispensing knock a few granules into the brass catch until you reach your desired load (this usually only takes 2-4 granules). My only complaint is the 30 minute warm up time (again see the note about patience). If you know you will throw powder plug- it in ahead of time and turn it on, the longer it sits and calibrates the better it is. So turn it on, go run an errand and come back and it's ready to go.

After reading some of the reviews, I was hesitant to buy. I finally broke down and bought one and I only have one word for it. WOW! I made sure it was weighing correctly, it was, and now I am turning out reloads faster than ever. It also works with all my shotgun shell powders. Steel powder to red dot it performs flawlessly. I recommend this for anyone who wants to do reloading faster!

My first DPS was in service 4-4-04, without any problems. I purchased their "Speed Upgrade Kit”, that increased the speed, but this speed also "bounces" kernels of the larger extruded powders out of the pan, when the first kernels hit the pan. The "restrictor plug" does not solve that problem. I fixed that when I purchased my DPS 3, (12-8-08) by using my RCBS 10-10 pan, which is a deeper pan, but this 10-10 powder pan will not work with the original DPS unit, because it contacts the drop tube. The DPS 3, has a lowered "scale area" which allows the RCBS 10-10 powder pan to be used. When calibrating the original DPS, you have to make sure that you do not "touch" the drop tube with the 20 GR. weight, or you will not get a precise calibration. I have had no problems with the original DPS, or the newer DPS 3. It is an "electronic scale", & as such, is very sensitive to any & all conditions surrounding it. I agree with several comments about the "warm up time", the longer the better. My RCBS 10-10 is my "double check" for the accuracy level of the DPS, which for me, has been flawless.

This thing works better than I expected. I load a tray, then while I'm seating them, load the other tray. I can seat one or two rounds while it's measuring one. I've loaded several hundred rounds so far and it has always stayed within 1/10 to 2/10 grain, never on the light side. I just set my charge for 2/10 of a grain shy, and it's usually 1/10 short or right on the money! So far, so good!

My son bought a DPS3 for me last year. This thing is SWEET!! I followed the set up instructions, and away I went. All charges thrown are accurate to the point of being boring. I have to force myself to keep checking the charges occasionally with a balance beam scale (it's never been off from what the digital readout says). It is slower than a standard volumetric powder measure, but more accurate and consistent. Once in a while a charge is thrown that is .1gr heavy (powder in the feed tube falling out on its own, probably traceable to me vibrating the bench). Auto Repeat function is fantastic, dump the last charge in a case, put the pan back on the scale, and it automatically drops the next charge, no pushing a button for every charge. Emptying the powder hopper is very easy. My only complaint - I wish the powder hopper locked in place. This is a great product.

The 1200 DPS 3 simply works great. I have used this to load my favorite .308 load and the time savings is incredible. Even considering the 30 minute warm-up time, I can load 50 rounds for a days shooting in less than half the time it took me to manually dump and trickle the powder. I hit the button, poor into the case, hit the button again, and while it is dispensing, I seat the bullet. I have yet to seat the bullet faster than the dispenser operates. I wish I had gotten one of these years ago.

Got the Lyman 1200 DPS 3 Digital Powder Scale and Dispenser System from Midway Friday, set it up, and let it warm for 24 hours. Loaded my first rounds today and all and can say is, perfect. Played with it a lot before loading 204 rounds. Checked against scales and it was right on. I am starting to wonder if the people that complained about it had set it up right. Make sure there is no draft on the scales. That the unit is level. That the table is rock solid. Lyman explains this in the book. Way to go Lyman and Midway.

I bought 1200 DPS II upgraded to a III. This scale so AWESOME!!! It throws the exact amount every time. Any mistakes have been my fault! I set my scales on a separate table by my bench and it never misses a beat. You can program your charges for quick access or manually enter different charges. I was working up different loads for a rifle I was trying out & it could be changed with ease. you hit the enter button and the next charge is weighed while you are pressing in the previous load's bullet. Be prepared though the unit has a half hour warm up period it has to go through every time. The instructions are almost idiot proof. They are very clear with what to do for everything you must do. To unload the powder when you are done you drop a trap door in the back, open the hidden door behind the first one and out it comes. Do not hesitate to buy this unit if you want fast accurate loads that are very easily repeated.

I bought my DPS1200 about almost 4 years ago and have literally drilled out 1000s of loads. It has never failed me yet. Yes it's a little slow, but the accuracy is superb. To speed things up I use the LEE powder scoops. I select one that will bring the powder weight about 2 grains short, that way I won't over charge the pan and it doesn't take long to drill out the remainder. I am thinking of buying another one to speed things up. You'll never regret purchasing a DPS1200!!

I just purchased the DPS 3 and I am very satisfied with it. I think some of the negative comments must be from earlier versions, DPS 1 & DPS 2. The system is fast, simple to operate and seems to be dead on to the .10 grain level when I check it (which I do VERY frequently) on a mechanical beam scale. Good job Lyman!

Absolutely amazing. I just received my DPS 3 - it is worth every penny. The Auto Repeat feature is very nice and it dispenses the charge very fast. It would measure out my load of Varget by the time I lifted up the funnel and verified that the powder charge in the case was correct. I had already sized and primed the cases, then measured the powder. It was so fast; I did not have time to seat a bullet before the next charge was ready. The DPS 3 is so much better than using a balance beam scale.

Best system I have ever used, fast loading, better than that balance beam. Loaded 450 rds of different caliber pet loads (38's and .357's), performed as stated in instructions, preheated it for 24 hrs before use on first run, within 50 rds you will see 1 or 2 rds that deviate between 1/10 and 2/10's of a grain, nothing to worry about. If I don't want them, I just throw them back into the powder hopper, I love it. Lyman has a winner.

My DPS has been a great timesaver. The motherboard failed on first one but Lyman took care of repairs with no problems - fast and efficent. If you are loading 223 cal ammo at 25 ish grains of powder you basically dump powder into brass and seat bullet in the time it takes to dispense rhe next load. 45 ish grains of 30 cal level takes 10 seconds longer and it takes you out of a rhythm -they should offer a variable speed control and it woulod be perfect.

Have had the DPS 1200 for about 2 years. Perfectly happy with this dispenser, but I have found that it needs to warm up longer than the required 30 minutes to provide consistently accurate loads. Lyman sent me a free Powder funnel pan (MUSA item #118739) that seemed to cause more inconsistency...I am concerned that there may be properties of the plastic that render this pan inferior to the brass pan that came with the scale (it caused the scale to transiently drop loads about 20 grains light). I now verify every load with a balance scale, but using the DPS 1200 saves LOTS of time.

Warmed unit up for 24 hours and started loading rounds. I had all the cases prepped so I didn't have to worry about vibrations as I have the dispenser on my bench. Thru consistent loads about 1/2 grain heavy. I just adjusted my scale 1/2 grain light and everything worked out just dandy. I could have used the powder flow reducer or trickler to maybe get a more even flow with Hunter powder but the unit worked fine without doing this. Clean up was quite a simple operation and went without a hitch. I would recommend this product. I avoided drafts and moved around as little as possible while the unit was dispensing so I do not know how this would affect the process.

Why do I give it a 4 star. Well as advertised it is FAST and accurate to the +\- advertised +/- 1/10 grain. I give it a 4 star because it is so sensitive to vibration, draft, and level. If you have it all set just right it works just wonderfully fast and accurate. Guess I should have given it a 5 star. Now when I use it my air conditioner is running about 8’ from the unit and my bench is a bit unleveled as well as me keeping the lid open and I can compensate for the difference by setting my repeat load to -.1 or -.2 bellow the charge I am checking and checking every charge on a magnetic balance scale. I can unusually have a case charged by the time another is ready to check on the 1200 DPS 3.

I`ve had a DPS 1 for 6 or 7 years with I don`t know how many thousands of loads thru it, with excellent performance! About a year ago I put the upgrade kit in it mainly because it makes powder changeovers easier but does dispense a little quicker too. I had to write this review in defense of the Lyman because mine at least has been wonderful! I don`t understand all the complaints about this machine. May I make some suggestions to improve performance for some of those users out there.... do the required 30 min. warmup, keep machine at 70 degrees or warmer, place machine on its own solid, level table and keep machine away from drafts. The only reason I give this product 4 stars is because I haven`t tried any of the others and maybe there are better electronic dispensers out there but I love mine!

The unit tells you when it's throwing an heavy charge - so I just dump the heavy ones back into the hopper - Sometimes I have to recalibrate - (better safe than sorry)- I don't mind the time because I enjoy reloading. Overall it's a good product. Just remember place it on a solid and steady surface.

I'm new to hand loading so take my opinion at face value. I like the product's speed but 70% of the time it overcharges by .1 of a grain. Possibly due to powder in use, but after using friend’s Chargemaster 1500 would recommend going with RCBS. Also, screw binds up when dispensing flake type powder.

1 Star Review from 8/16/2008: This product has proven to be completely unreliable. It will start to throw wildly variable charges after 5 to 12 accurate ones and then must be turned off for 8 to 12 hours before it will work again. This last session I got 12 loads, the next one was 4 grains too heavy, the next one was 30 grains too much and it got worse from there. A 20 grain bullet weighed 4.2 grains according to the scale. Don't know yet what I'll do with it. Too light for a boat anchor and too big for a paper weight. Update to previous review. 12/6/2009 I sent the scale back to Lyman and they sent me a new one. So far it has been working properly and throws accurate charges, plus or minus .1 grain with powders like BLC2, H335 and RL22. Still a little gun shy after the problems with the first unit and weigh every third charge on my old balance scale. Time will tell if it stays reliable.

I bought a 1200 DPS 2 and then upgraded it to DPS 3 which fixed the issue of the system being slow to dispense powder. The problem I had was very serious in that it was dumping powder charges that were significantly heavier than the scale indicated. Cutting to the chase, I fixed the problem by: 1. Waiting for cooler weather. I load in my garage and in Las Vegas in the Summer, the temp out there is well over 100F. This may have been a factor. 2. Ensuring that the System is turned OFF when I'm done with it each time. To avoid the 30 minute 'warm up' I had been leaving it ON. Probably not a good idea. Now that the weather is cool, I just loaded 100 .25/06 rounds using the DPS 3. I re-weighed each charge for the first 50 rounds and found the DPS 3 was spot on and trusted it for the last 50. Would I buy it again? No. But I have it and its actually working well for me now. By the way, I talked to Lyman and they were willing to repair/replace it despite it being 'out of warranty.' That’s pretty impressive to me anyway. No point in sending it back as a replacement system would probably have the same issues in hot weather. I just wish I had an air conditioned reloading room!

This powder scale is pretty good. It is much faster than manual scales and accurate. There are a few things that can be changed. 1. The plastic power holding tube can get wobbly. 2. To dump remaining powder you have to hold the holding tube on to dump remaining powder. 3. Warm up period is 30 min. way to long! Other than that, it works as advertised. I have loaded thousands of rounds with it. I would recommend it as long as you can deal with its short comings.

It worked well with stick powders, however flake powders such as Unique caused the screw to bind up. I'd have to disassemble, clean, and reassemble and I could dispense maybe 7 more loads of ~ 5 grains before having to repeat. I got rid of this product and purchased a RCBS Chargemaster instead. The RCBS does not have problems with flake powders, however the Lyman dispensed the stick powders, to my impression, faster.

This is one of the worst reloading investments that I have ever made considering similar products that are available. I was using an RCBS Little Dandy rotor measure but was restricted to ball powders. When I moved to .30-06 & .308, I wanted to use stick powders which bind in the rotors. I thought this would be a good investment, but how wrong I was! I have already had replacement parts sent out from Lyman for the feeder tube and charge box. I'm getting an ERROR message when I try to calibrate and there's no reference in the manual as to how to fix this. There's also a warning that an active cell phone cannot be within 25 feet of the unit when in use! Give me a break. They can't shield the unit any better than that? I may send it back to Lyman for repair, but based on other reviews, one trip back doesn’t even touch the surface. At this point, I'm buying an RCBS Chargemaster. It costs a little more, but from what I've researched, it actually works.

I bought this to save time and it's done nothing but waste time and cause frustration. At first I thought it was good (except for the disconcerting affect of the dispenser being integral with the scale. When you push buttons on the dispenser it tweaks the chassis of the unit and alters the scale reading as you calibrate) but after a few months of using it I began getting frequent error messages and requests for recalibration and re-zeroing for no known reason. This shook my confidence in previous loads and I borrowed a beam scale from a friend to double check some of them. Of the random loads I checked some were spot on, some were heavy and some were as much as 1.5 grains heavy. This is dangerous and I had no choice but to unload all the rds I had loaded with this machine. Midway took it back and I ordered an RCBS ChargeMaster 1500. I hope to be giving that one a much better review. Advice if you have the Lyman one and can't exchange it. 1) Keep all things that might cause RF interference well away. 2) double check loads with a second scale often. 3) Be as gentle as possible with it. Even the slightest amount of impact to the scale when returning the empty pan will cause errors.

Bummer, this my second unit and it failed as did the first. The first unit lasted 6 weeks, at which time it became erratic, the scale would dance randomly, wouldn't calibrate and even the slight pressure on any buttons or the case would send the time into convulsions. Midway great service folks immediately sent me another which work perfectly.... for a while. 8 months later, the second unit is again acting up. 7 of 10 powder charge are too large, resulting in the unit beeping and displaying CAL. Re calibrating does no good, and this unit is also going back. Please note that these units are VERY sensitive to the presence of a cell phone, causing erratic operation. This is caused by poor design (A/D conversion noise immunity) of the sensitive measurement circuitry in the scale system. This device should never have been released into the public. Again Midways’ customer service came to the rescue and crediting me the cost of the old unit plus all the money I've spent on shipping towards an RCBS unit. Hope the new unit works better than these Lyman's did. Bob

On the 10th time using this machine some of the buttons stopped working, I could no longer dispense powder, the only thing that would work is the scale, but the button to zero it quit working too, so the scale was useless, and as far as fast not quite, it’s a good dispenser if you are changing the charge weight all the time, but if you're reloading the same weight charge beam scale is just as fast. The machine would drift away from zero after the 15-20 powder drop, wish I had bought the RCBS.

I bought this Lyman 1200 unit and was later sorry. The instructions were clear and setup was simple. Everything functioned exactly as advertised, except in the most important way. The displayed weight for any powder charge was inconsistent, inaccurate, and non-repeatable. I tried everything possible to make sure it wasn’t because of "operator error". I shipped it back to the Lyman factory. They determined it was defective and kindly sent me a new unit at no cost. This second unit was no better than the first. Midway then kindly allowed me to return it for credit and (with a little extra cash from me) sent me an RCBS ChargeMaster 1500 which is an absolute delight and works with nearly 100% accuracy. Notably, in addition to being inaccurate, the Lyman design is also poor in one area that is not immediately obvious. When it is time to remove remaining powder from the hopper and return to storage, or change to a different powder, NOT all the powder can be gravity-drained easily. The Lyman unit must be lifted and tipped to get the last powder out. This means you have to recalibrate the unit every single time, which is time consuming and tedious. Save your money. Don’t buy this piece of junk. Get an RCBS ChargeMaster 1500 and you will be much happier. It is worth the few extra dollars and in my humble opinion, the best product of its type on the market. I have been handloading for about 25 years. Whatever automatic powder dispenser you decide to buy, I have a simple recommendation. That is to also purchase a check weight set, consisting of assorted small pieces of metal weighing different numbers of grains. There are several brands available. Weighing these various test weights will give you confidence that your machine is telling you the truth. This will insure you really are making precision, uniform ammunition.

Unit worked well for first 5 uses then failed. Went stupid with scale no longer sensing, readout varied with pressure to keys and case, Cal function resulted in ERROR msg not described in manual. Returned. Lyman cust svc was nice, but who needs this type of aggravation? Gold sticker on bottom of unit reads MADE IN CHINA

Spent loads of money, loaded 4 rounds, system froze, reset, nothing, maybe I got a bad one, for that price there really shouldn't be a "bad one".

Lyman should stop selling this product before they get someone killed. The scale drifts as much as .7 of a grain.

My first scale(DPS 2)failed after three hundred loads, the electronic screen/LCD quit working on it. I returned it and upgraded to the DPS 3. Two-hundred loads later, the DPS 3 scale started to float +.5 to +.7 grains. I do not recommend this product.

Mine has been back for repairs 2 times. The third time it went on the blink I tossed it in the trash can and will never ever buy another Lyman product.

This product's lack of accuracy is DANGEROUS. I thought I was getting a safe load of powder for my .357. The scale drifted while I was throwing charges as it was throwing 2 grains more than it should have. When I got back from the range with an exploded pistol I pulled the bullets and found this out the hard way.

Buyer beware! Do not buy this product. The scale I purchased started malfunction with calibration errors after only 6 or 7 times being used. You will find you really don't save any time with this scale by the time you wait for the 30 minute warm up period and spend your time constantly re-calibrating the scale it will take hours to charge your loads. Plus your never sure if the charges are correct. I experienced variances of .4 grains. When I read the warranty card it stated I would have to wait 60 days for Lyman to repair or replace the unit. Talk about speeding up your reloading process! Save yourself the grief of dealing with this made in China junk and buy something else!
