    Also includes 15 specialty bits:
  • Weaver/Ruger scope ring clamp bit
  • Redfield windage screw bit
  • Leupold windage screw bit
  • Mauser stock cross bolt bit
  • Millett rear sight adjustment bit

    Note on bits:
  • The bits in these sets are designed to break before damaging the fastener itself. Breakage of a bit should not be considered a defect, rather it means that the fastener will require some other means of removal or an application of a suitable compound that will penetrate threads, such as Kano Kroil. Replacement bit product numbers may be found in this Wheeler Bit Chart.

As another reviewer said, a set of Pachmayr drivers kept breaking or bending. Right now I'm still waiting for 3 replacement drivers from them. In the meantime I got this COMPLETE set of drivers from Wheeler. I can't say enough about how well they are made or how useful they are. Save yourself time and money (I now have to get replacement screws for several guns) and get this set. You won't ever say it was a waste of money.

The set arrived promptly from Midway. As I inventoried the items using the handy chart provided, I noted two duplicate bits, and two missing items. I e-mailed Wheeler and copied Midway. Within hours, Wheeler had replacement bits on the way. Although not required, Midway also sent replacement bits. Exceptional customer support by both companies!

I should have had this years ago. I have not damaged a single screw head since receiving this. Find the right tip and start turning. No slippage and no damage. I am sure there must be a few gun screws that these tips will not fit, but I haven't come across them yet. The storage box keeps the tips well organized also. A must have item unless you are willing to accept damaging what you intend to work on.

I like the variety of bits and tools; however there are a couple things I'd fix if I had the chance. First, the case lid is not tight against the bits, so when you first get the kit, you can expect to spend about 30-45 minutes sorting all the bits and putting them all back in their little holes. Not all the bits are numbered which makes it fun to try and put them all back in the right holes. Do all the numbered ones first, then you can figure out the rest by comparing the bit shape and sizes. Be careful how you pick up the plastic box or they'll all fall out again. Next go through and examine the bits and debur the ones that have griding flash below the bit head. I got a nasty cut off one of the bits. Other than that, this set is looking good. Time will tell how well the bits stand up to the abuse of day to day use.

I ordered this set last week and as soon as it arrived I went through the whole set come to find out I had a double bit that I already had in the kit and was missing one of the bit that was suppose to be in the the kit. A call to Wheeler and it was on its way to me. That is customer service hard to find these days. The set works great and you have all the bits and tools your going to ever need barring being a gunsmith. The case that came with the set is ready to go to the range or to the shop. Well worth the money.

Wheeler’s Engineers measured the screws on 100+ antique and modern firearms to come up with a selection of bits to fit the widest variety of screws. Bits are S2 tool steel hardened to 56-58 Rockwell “C”. The 54 hollow ground flat screw bits are made up of 9 groups. Each group is made up of a different width, with blade thickness graduated from thin to thick. This allows the bit to completely fill the slot in the screw head and help avoid damage to screw or gun. Set also includes 15 specialty, 8 allen, 4 phillips, and 3 Torx bits. 2 triangular rubberized handles (8” and 6.25” OAL) provided with 2” shaft extension, and square to hex adapter. All packed in a molded plastic carry case that measures 8” x 10.5”x 3” with 2 sturdy hinges, and a single snap latch on the front. Lid of case has a bit locator diagram that lists 6 digit part number that is stamped in each bit. When I received my set, screws had come out of hole positions and were loose in the container. The list made it easier to put them back in exactly the right place. Best/most complete set of gunsmith bits I’ve purchased, and I’ve tried most of them over the years. Well worth the cost to avoid damage to one firearm.

This set is "Professional" grade, no doubt. I made the mistake of spending around $20.00 on a Pachmayr set from X-Mart. It went back the same day. The first screw I tried to turn broke the bit. Spend your money one time and buy this set. Absolutely perfect! Thanks MidwayUSA and Wheeler Engineering...

I've read the pros and cons of the other reviewers and mostly agree. This is a fairly good product with a bit that fits almost every application I've needed in my novice gunsmithing. The bits are great in that they are hollow ground. However, the quality of the metal isn't as good as I had hoped. It will bend with some fair torquing. The blades of the screwdriver tips will bend and or crack as some have experienced. Magnetism - no problem that I've seen. The Alan headed bits and torx bits will strip on tough torqued in screws. Overall, it's a decent product but for what you're getting, it could be a bit cheaper.

I used this bit set to install triggers, mount scopes, epoxy bed actions and disable bolt action rifles. The variety of tool bits is very useful. I haven't used them all, but I have used half or so. The bits are not superior quality. They are adequate. I have torqued up to 65 inch pounds with no breakages. My only gripe: some bits were not present and others repeated. I recommend an inventory upon receipt of this bit set.

My wife gave me this product @ Christmas 06. I have not had any bits break or bend, unlike the Forster set it replaced. The selection is quite impressive. Handles and shafts are secure and centered. By the reviews I have read I'm left wondering if the manufacture was moved elsewhere at some point... The two points of frusteration with my set are that the box doesn't latch securely (it must be held/moved in horizontal position at all times to avoid spilling the entire contents, negative on throwing it in range bag) and the smallest few allen bits are nearly round punch bits with barely any flat at the sides (I avoid using them, instead finding similar size loose allen wrenches and putting them in the integral tray). Those minor details aside, I'm very satisfied with my set.

The specialty bits seem brittle. I had a problem with scope alignment and trial and error led me to installing and removing a set of scope rings numerous times. Scope ring screws are not tightened to a great degree but I had a torx bit crumble in the process. It did not break. It literally crumbled as if it was made from some type of pot metal. The strength of the 'specialty type' bits in this kit is questionable.

As far as driver sets go, this one is O.K. but if you want to do rifle scopes you need to use the allen wrench that comes with your rings, because I have yet to find a hex head in this set to fit any of the rings I have installed. As far as I am concerned, it is not worth the price. I had to buy seperate hex bits to fit the rings or use the torx bits.

This set is good for the price, but the special bits, 1911 grip screw bit and the Mauser stock bolt bit, etc. are poor quailty (workmanship). For the average guy, the set is fine, if your a gunsmith Brownell's set is a higher quailty at a higher cost.

These bits are MUCH TOO SOFT !!! When a properly fitted bit is used in a recalcitrent screw, and only a moderate amount of torque applied, the result is usually a deformed bit. That deformation swages out the slot of the screw, and no driver will grip properly again. That results in a replacement screw required, which may not be available. I use the Wheeler set only if the screw loosens with light torque. If not, I use a properly ground HARD driver. I MUCH PREFER a driver to break, rather than deform, like these soft Wheeler drivers do. I have had a set about two years now. The commonly used bits are rounded and slick, even though only light torque has been applied to them. I am disappointed with the Wheeler driver set.

Both drivers are el cheapo and the tool bits are poorly made, they are "rough”. The 1911 grip bit on the set I received, the collar is so misaligned that it won't go on the grip stud. If Wheeler has a quality control dept, they sleep a lot. MIDWAY is great to do business with, but if you need a deluxe set, it's not this one.

The quality is not commensurate with price. Magnetic inserts fell out of both driver handles within a couple weeks. Bit #463-978 (literally!) shattered the first time used to remove an over-tightened action screw, badly marring a blued steel floorplate.

Like so many others I bought into the rave reviews and advertising and bought the 82 pc set late in 2007. The first time I tried to loosen and screw the blade shattered. I tried another and the blade broke. I have off center holders and the overall set seems to be not of metallurgical quality for serious gunsmith work. I too am fearful of these breaking and marring a customer's finish so I have decided to use them only for internal work and as they break as midway for replacements. For serious work I suggest finding another manufacturer. I would not buy another Wheeler product as their Quality Control in certainly not keeping the manufacturing processes in check.

It WAS great having all them bits, you'll need them as they snap off when used. The screwdriver handles spin on the shaft, some don't have magnets, not a good deal. I'm gonna start throwing the bits away as they break, and replace them with a different brand. Too bad, it was a cool Christmas present.

Having shopped for a good hex-head screwdriver set for some time, and finally ordered this one. It had rave reviews in many places and the manufacturer, Wheeler, is widely touted as a quality manufacturer. I ordered it along with the Wheeler torque-wrench. I could not have been more disappointed. The screwdriver's tip holders were off-center (a simple machining issue) and their attachment to the screwdrivers shaft was crooked. The finish was a light and cheap chrome. I was appalled to such an extent I haven't used the tips -- I wouldn't trust them. The Wheeler torque-wrench was a similar disappointment. Poorly constructed and made from cheap materials. I have not tested the accuracy of its torque feature. I have lost confidence in this manufacturer. It amazes me that buyers of their products are so uncritical. Anyone who has ever used high quality tools will run a mile from these products. Buy CK screwdrivers from Germany instead. Mine are 20 years old, never once stripped or broke. They are even straight!

I should have heeded the negative comments above. They look pretty in the box, but that's where it ends. On first use the magnet fell out of one of the handles when I was trying to insert a tip. One of the tips “exploded” when I tried to back a wood screw out of a stock. I don't know where the pieces went. It left an arrowhead shaped point. It was just luck that the gun wasn't gouged. The tip looks like cast metal rather than being “hollow ground” steel. The S&W trigger return spring tool is a joke. It may be usable as a solid tool, but the tip is too loose in the handle to control properly. I bought them to avoid gun screw damage, but now I'm afraid to use them on a gun. The good comments make me wonder if these screwdrivers are like some of the other items that I have read comments about, they start out being made with quality and then manufacture is moved to China. They will make me suspect of any of Wheeler Engineering's products. It really makes you appreciate Midway's liberal return policy. But, unfortunately, you still have the inconvenience of finding a suitable shipping box, make a trip to the post office and pay the return postage.
