Frank Barnes (1918-1992) began collecting information on handgun cartridges at the early age of 12, thanks to his father who was a police officer. Most people don't know that Frank began a career in law enforcement as a collegiate professor after receiving his master's degree. He was also a pilot, a racecar driver and had a love for Geology. He soon began to experiment with different cartridges and decided to publish a manual for all of them. Cartridges of the World was first published in 1965. It's lived through 10 editions and can be found on most reloader's bookshelves today. Even though Frank passed away many years ago, his dream of publishing the best book for all calibers lives on.

During a tour of the FBI building in Washington DC. I saw several copies of Cartridges of the World in the lab area. This is one of the hard to put down books and may cost you some sleep. It is more than an excellent source of technical material and specs for the reloader. It is loaded with history on the development of many common and wildcat cartridges. The author, Frank Barnes created his own wildcat cartridge that was later officially adopted by the US Army.

The 11th edition is packed full of new stuff vs the 10th! Almost the entire line of Hawk cartridges, data for new rounds besides factory loads and many new wildcats. Most new cartridges are in here - WSM's, 204 Ruger, 338 Federal and more

This has always been the gospel for any gun enthusiast who wants to comment on cartridges. I've worn out each new edition. The summary charts for dimensions and the load data for obsolete and long gone cartridges have allowed me to make cases and loads for many antique guns. The historical comments are more updated and the comparative ballistics are great. IF you want to talk about more than one gun's ballistics, you need this!

This book does the job! I want a reference for cartridges past and present that I am not familiar with. There are pictures or drawings of the cartridges, histories, and general useful and interesting information. Rifle, pistol, rimfire, shotgun-- it's covered. This is great for looking something up or just browsing. Of course it's not a load book! I have plenty of those for the familiar cartridges I load for. There might be a newer version of this 2006 edition out, but this is just what I needed.
