This is a good trimmer! Those that gave it one star obviously do not know how to operate simple equipment. It doesn’t wobble and the set up time is 3 minutes max. The only thing that seems to be wrong with it is it must not be idiot proof.

Wish I'd bought it 15 years ago. So far, all my .223 Remington cases (3000) are PERFECT. Set-up was done in 5 minutes and repeatability is excellent. Read the instructions and insert the pilot THEN tighten the chuck. Not a problem. I compared it with a RCBS trimmer and the shaft on the RCBS had quite a bit of wobble in it...the Lyman had none. Buy it!

Accurate and repeatable, if you remember to insert the pilot into the case before tightening the collet down on the base. My only (minor) complaint would be the location of the pilots. I usually fill the storage hole of the pilot I'm using with brass chips, making it impossible to put back in without cleaning. Not a big deal, but I've dropped pilots while cleaning out chips. If you are taking a lot of brass off, as in cartridge conversions, consider buying one of the powered versions, or the power adapter.

I bought this trimmer at the recommendation of a gunsmith friend of mine. He was absolutely right when he told me it is an excellent, repeatable trimmer. I have had absolutely no problems with the "wobble" others have written about, however I ensure the case is centered in the chuck and the pilot is inside the case mouth before tightening the chuck. I also ensure the cutting head is tightly screwed in to the cutter shaft. I also found setting the cutting length of the shaft to be easy when I use a reference piece of brass in the new caliber. When using the trimmer, take your time and be patient when using this product and it will reward you with precisely trimmed brass to the nearest +/- 0.001 every time.

I have to agree with Mr. Sanders, you have to insert the pilot in the case mouth before you tighten the chuck. This has worked very well for me and it is a very good investment. There is absolutly no wobble in my shaft as some of the other users were saying. If mine started to wobble, I would call Lyman and see what they can do about it.

I inserted the pilot before tightening the chuck head. I trimmed around 90 rifle cases while checking case length every 10 cases. +/- 0.001" repeatability is what I observed. The adjustments are easy to use, and the fine adjustment comes in handy when initially fine tuning case length. A spot for the Allen wrench would be helpful. Pilot holes do fill up with brass shavings; just a lame place to store pilots.

At first my .223 brass would keep popping out of the chuckhead but after I filed both retaining cams with a cylindrical file at a 45 degree angle, it now works like a charm. For the price, it's a great investment for those on a budget.

This is a good cutter. I gave it four stars as it is not fool-proof but if you take your time and first read what people have to say, you can trouble shoot it the very first time you use it and that way you know it's idiosyncrasies. I like the chuck for the shell holder. The detents are a nice feature and they hold very well. You must be sure to set the shell very near center of the chuck, THEN seat the pilot in the case neck BEFORE you tighten the chuck or you will have alignment issues. This will help to remove wobble and tilt issues that might lead to uneven trimming. It is a big tool and takes up quite a bit of space on the bench top. I bought it primarily for magnum length rifle action cases as I use the Lee cutter system for straight wall and other cases trimming.

If you take care to tighten everything down, and use the correct pilot, this thing works very well. Give good repeatability. I agree with the previous complaint on the location of the pilots but this is pretty nitpicky.

This is an excellent product and works with cases of all conventional sizes (except .50 Browning). I'd like it better if it were electrified, though, as arthritis makes it hard for me to turn the crank. I believe there is a conversion available and may acquire one at a later date. All in all, though, this case trimmer fulfills all the needs of my reloading shop.

I have used this trimmer for years to create bench rest quality .308 cases. The "wobble" referred to by some reviewers is very easy to eliminate by the way you chuck the case. You must run the correctly sized pilot into the case neck mouth then tighten the chuck, otherwise it wobbles horribly as they say. I use a home made dial indicator setup to check the case squareness and it cuts as accurate as.0002 inches from the base to the newly cut neck. It is easy to mischuck the case if you don't use the pilot to center it before clamping down. As far as removing pilots, I use a very small flat head screw driver to start the pilot out and I grease them all before use very lighlty. Buy This!

A solid trimmer, and came with most of the pilots that I needed. The pilots store in holes in the trimmer body which makes it easier to keep track of them. It could be improved by some kind of attachment to catch the brass shavings (I use an old rag).

This trimmer works. To those people who say the trim lengths are inconsistent due to the lock screws not holding, here's a tip: Throw away the Allen wrench that comes with the trimmer. Use a quality screwdriver style Allen bit to torque those screws down nice and tight without stripping them. I did that and the unit trims perfect every single time!

My unit does fine with bottleneck rifle brass( 30-06, .303, 6.5x55 Swede ).I absolutely cannot complain about the speed, accuracy, and consistency this trimmer delivers when used on the afforementioned brass. The problem(s) is with my .44 Mag/Spec brass. These cases tend to eat my cutter. About 150 rounds and a sharp, new cutter goes to pot. Squareness is absent:+/- .004 variation in the case mouths. I can't figure the luck with the rifle brass! I don't know that another manuf. does or will do any better. I've handled other brands and came to the conclusion that a inexpensive casting machined with poor tooling is all one can get regardless of price.

I bought my trimmer more than 15 years ago. I've not used it much. I trim after resizing because cases stretch further when they are sized. The Lyman pilots are too tight to use in resized cases. For my 30-06 and 300 Win Mag loads I had to take the 308 pilot and put it into a drill chuck and hold it on a grinding stone until it was the proper diameter, then follow up with some fine grit sandpaper to smooth it out so as not to scratch the inside of my case necks. The construction of the shaft is shabby too, a few years ago I had the handle fall off the shaft's throw and I had to reinstall it and "blunt" the end with a hammer to keep it in position. Just a few days ago the shaft's throw has come loose from the shaft. I've tried Loc-tite, solder, and marring the two with a punch, and it will not hold together. In addition, Lyman's customer support has been completely absent so far. I've called and e-mail and not gotten a reply yet. The lack of Customer Support has convinced me to buy another brand of trimmer, but I don't know who just yet. The case locking mechanism is a winner though, it works easily and holds well on everything I've put in it from 10mm, to .38 special, to 223 Rem, to 300 Win Mag.

This trimmer does a good job on the larger calibers, but small cases like 223 slip in the universal chuck that Lyman uses to hold the case heads. If you don't plan to reload the small calibers it's fine, but if you do, try a different model.

So much for Lyman. I already have a tumbler 1200 sent back to them right now....didn’t work (new out of the box)...after 300 rounds of .223 case trimming with this model the chuck head will not lock the brass securely in place making it impossible to trim..I bought a Lyman press and all the bells and whistles about one month ago because of the age of the company.. but you are never to old to live and learn the hard way.

I really like the shellholder system on this trimmer but that is about it. The shaft wobbles so bad in the bushing that it is impossible to get a square case. Also the way the cutters are ground, after trimming the cases, it is very hard to get the pilot out of the case. I thought maybe this was due to the cutter that came with the trimmer, but I ordered extra cutters and they did the same thing. I would not buy this trimmer if i had it to do over. I replaced this trimmer with the rcbs trim pro and i have no regrets.

I have been reloading for 41 years. I have used several different brands of trimmers. I bought one of these Lyman trimmers because the chuck idea appealed to me. I can safely say that this is the worst trimmer I ever owned. I Think you can find a far better trimmer for the money. RCBS and Forster are two good ones. My all time favorite is my Forster.

I have owned the Lyman trimmer for a year or two now and I am going to replace it with another brand today. I can't get a square case to save my life. one side of my 45 cases are at .888 and the other side may be .086 or anything in between. It won't hold .223 cases. I have contacted Lyman customer service and was told about the head adjustment but it still won't hold .223 cases reliably. I tried to contact Lyman again but had no reply. The collets are so mis-sized that the not only stick in the cases but also they actually squeak when turned. Do not waste your money on this trimmer, i simply does not work!

I would have rated this minus 10 stars if I could. The first time I used this trimmer I had a problem with the stops sliding on the shaft and causing the cases to be too short. Easy fix or so I thought tighten the set screws a little more but all that happened was the set screws stripped out. So now its stuck and I can only use it to trim .223 cases.

Of the 4 case trimmers I have tried, this is the absolute worst. The machine work is sloppy as the cutter shaft wobbles in the bearing. The hardware is cheap as the screws strip out in short order. I did get a chuckle out of one of the reviews here on this product though, referring to the "sweet spot" for this trimmer. The only sweet spot for this trimmer is in the garbage can. Don’t waste your money.

Received this item from Midway. I am beyond frustration with the product and with Lyman Customer Service. After trimming approximately twenty-five .223 cases, the chuck would no longer hold the case. I then switched to .308 cases and actually got about a hundred trimmed before the same problem occurred. I telephoned the Lyman Customer Service Department. They acknowledged the problem as a known one and proceeded to talked me through making an adjustment to the product. I was told that I had to find the "sweet spot". However, after numerous attempts, I was unable to find this "sweet spot". I spoke with Customer Service again and they advised me to return the unit. I have been reloading for more than 28 years and have several other Lyman products; mostly casting molds and equipment. To say the least, I am not pleased with this product; especially after learning that this is a known problem and Lyman still markets it with the known problem. Now, in addition to the original purchase price, I had to incur the additional expense of the postage to return the item for warranty repair. I am retired and on a fixed income and any additional expense is not welcome. Received the unit back after approximately 4 weeks; however, Lyman did not return the pilots - I still do not know if the product actually works! I telephoned Lyman Customer Service yesterday and the phone rang, and rang, and rang. After numerous attempts, I finally reached a representative. The problem of the missing pilots was explained and I was told they would be shipped to me -however, they could not tell me when they would be shipped -- maybe in a week?? I should have bought an RCBS - a company where product quality and customer service actually means something!

After careful consideration and a great deal of experimentation I have come to the conclusion that I have nothing positive to say about this product whatsoever. It is junk, period. The allen screws will not hold the collets in effectively, they always come loose and have to be manually extracted from the case. Likewise the allen screws on the adjustment dials also fail to prevent slippage. The chuck head does not clamp with the case properly aligned with the collet so you must first seat the collet in the case mouth and then lock the case. Even after doing this the alignment is not perfect resulting in scratching the inside of the case. The chuck head broke after less than 50 cases. Finally the cutting head dulled out after about 20 cases. Save yourself from an ulcer and buy ANYTHING other than this!!!!

Sad, but true. This is one of the worst tools I own. After reading the other remarks above. Both set screws are stripped. The cutter is so dull, that it leaves a large burr on brass. The brass is always clamped in crooked (not 90 degrees). And worse of all, the repeatable (depth control) is +/-.030. That's real bad. Don't buy, use anything else, Die grinder or a hand file.

No this trimmer was not good. The first thing was the bushing in the crank side were about .005 off and would allow too much slop in the cutter. The next thing was the cutter sent with the unit was dull. The shell holder when turned to the clockwise direction would throw the case out of allingment.
