I bought this not for shooting but to use in my Aerospace class that I teach at the local High School. I put it into our wind tunnel and it accurately measures the wind speed for the various projects we do. The price was great, the quality even better considering that a bunch over 16 year old's are using it daily. This beats the heck out of the $100 ones I have used in the past and it has lasted twice as long.

I shopped around for other wind meters and found this one to be priced much lower than the others. I have used it several times and I can honestly say that it does exactly what I had hoped it would! I highly recommend this for shooter's concerned with wind speed.

Very small and compact device. Great tool to have along when shooting far distances. Says there is no battery included but mine had one in it!

I have had no problems with my unit. I also put a 1/2 drop of turbine oil on blade shaft, and it seems to turn with less wind. I read on another site that the battery that comes with the unit {like a lot of other products] is only for product testing and should be replaced for best operation. I would also advise a drop of "Deox" contact cleaner on all your electronic devices. It will cut down on battery drain [ resistance] and prevent oxidation. Have you ever seen a ruined flashlight.

After reading the reviews, I ordered this unit and am VERY happy with it. Mine consistently reads 1.5 mph out of the box, no battery door buggaboos. Very nice quality. Some of the display details could be bigger but, I complain about everything now that I need reading glasses! The main readings are good sized and update very quickly. Maybe I have the new one but the instructions on the box were fine (simple step through menus).

My son and I are novice shooters and I was looking for equipment that wasn't too pricey but would get us started in the right direction. Midway had these on sale so I got 2 (wish I had gotten the 3rd!) They do everything the higher priced ones that the "pros" were using at our range. Good quality for the $$ better than expected actually. Better operating instructions would be helpful, but if you read reviews before purchase, others have been kind enough to share their operating tips. As for a case, I found an old cell phone case which fit the meter perfectly.

This little wind meter is a pretty sweet little tool. I used it yesterday on a ground squirrel hunt. It measured the wind flawlessly. I would highly recommend this product.

As with any new gadget I buy after playing with it for a few minutes and staring at the instructions it was simple to operate. I have read winds down to 2.5 mph regularly. I used it for the first few times with the included battery with out any problems. I had already bought a new one after reading some of the earlier reviews so I changed it out as a just in case excersise. So far so good. Seems to be a reliable and in-expensive tool in my range bag.

I think it is a great device for the price, I agree though that more instructions would have been useful, and I hope to find something to carry it in to protect it, but overall a very good buy. The product information card that comes with it states battery not included, so I went and bought battery for it, opened it up to insert it and low and behold there was already a battery in it.

Great little gadget. Does what I need it to (current wind, gust, and temp). Minimal amount of directions absolutely stink though. I also wish it had a little case to protect it while in the range bag...but I'd still buy it again.

Just got this item today. I have to agree with other reviewers that some better instructions are needed. After 10 minutes of tinkering I figured it out. Just hold down the mode button for 3 seconds to turn on. Then hold mode down again for 3 more seconds to get into the "change mode" option. Toggle through the modes with the "set" key. Note that the "set" key will toggle through both the units (mph, knots, etc) and readout mode (max, avg or current). These need to be changed one at a time but they are controlled with exactly the same keystrokes. ie: After you select units with the set key, hit mode again to lock it in. Repeat this process again for readout mode. Hope that helps a bit. I don't know why Caldwell couldn't have hired a technical writer or engineering intern to sit down for 20 minutes to write some better instructions. Figuring it out is about as complicated as setting your digital watch without instructions - not too bad but instructions would make it so much faster and less frustrating (think about the customer, Caldwell). I checked the thermometer against six others in the house and they were all within 2 degrees of each other - not too bad. Without another wind meter to check this one against, who knows how accurate it really is. My guess is it's fairly good. I went out and bought a battery for the unit only to find out that a perfectly good battery actually came with it despite the "battery not included" label on the packaging. Check to see if yours has a battery before you go out and spend $4 on a new one. I also agree a case would be nice. I was surprised to find it was only 4 inches tall by 1.5 inches wide.

Cryptic instructions but reading through them twice! The meter is easy to use, Obviously must be below freezing for display to show wind chill. I would recommend this to others, especially when it’s on sale!

I have seen in other reviews that the included instructions were not very detailed and that it states that it does not come with a battery. I think that Caldwell listened because the instructions that came with my unit were quite clear and it stated on the package that battery was included. I checked the charge and it was at 2.97V. Almost new. This is my first wind meter that I have ever owned or used, so I have nothing to compare it to. As far as checking the accuracy of the wind speed, I drove down the road during no wind conditions and checked the indicated wind speed to the MPH that I was driving. I was within 1.5 -2MPH. Now that was assuming that the MPH gauge is accurate. The temp gauge was accurate though. It is small in size and will easily be stored in a shirt pocket. The one thing that I thought could be improved was the size of the digital read out. It is small and skinny and from a distance it can be a little hard to read. If they used the same font of the read out but just made it a little bolder, I think the problem would be fixed. For this reason I’m giving it 4 stars. Overall for a $20 unit (bought it on sale), it is a good unit that will give you accurate readings. It is a great tool to learn how to judge the wind by observing the natural surroundings.

Thanks for posting instruction R.FOX!! I found using a magnifying glass to see different settings helpful (they are tiny). I oiled the vane with teflon oil and it seems to give steadier readings and start easier, yes blowing on it to get it going in light wind. Using a fan it will read down between 1-2mph ok, not very sensitive to low speeeds and I suspect gusty winds better be high or when the vane quits moving there is a resistance to start moving. The temperature is changed from C to F with a paper clip thru a hole in the back. But I also can't figure the wind chill reading area. The wind can be set to average, max or current? thru the set, mode button and stays visible on the small screen while it's on. It's nice to be able to get a temp setting as it changes ballistics with longer shots. The battery included with mine was shot and I couldn't see the numbers but had another battery and after putting it in everything is easy to read.

Very, very!poor instructions; and did not discover battery was included until after I purchased one per incorrect label on package. Wind Chill function does not appear to work, although other units do. Still do not know how to program unit to read average wind mph with wind chill - and may not be possible. Temp is quite slow to respond to different changes - like taking it out of a pocket to get a reading. May send mine back for a refund. Kind of like an inexpensive watch - good for basic time but not something to navigate with. Because unit has to be held directly into the wind, you have to face into the wind to read it, which is not always convenient ...still though it does the basic task of measuring the wind.

This is the first Caldwell product I am disappointed in. I suppose you get what you pay for (I bought mine as July '09 "Hot Deal", so it was pretty cheap). I bought the wizard to use in airgun field target shooting. The thermometer works fine, but the wind turbine doesn't move when there is a pretty good breeze blowing, so I question its value for my intended purpose. Someone else suggested a drop of light machine oil on the shaft...I'll try that tomorrow.

This unit seems to me like a cheap toy at best. The battery door won't stay shut and the wind speed indicator gives false readings when I push on the battery door. The battery indicator jumps all over its range depending how I hold the unit. When I finally got out to the range the battery went dead! Don't waste your money. I'm throwing mine in the trash and buying a real anemometer. I'm not even going to waste Midway's time by sending it back. not worth it.

Bought one to try despite mixed reviews. Agree with the bad/lack of instructions. Mine did have a battery installed although half dead. Tried it in the field on a varmint hunt. Absolutely not worth the time to use! The unit I had seemed to have one of the LCD correctors that would not work/display the entire character. Sent mine back for a refund. I cannot honestly recommend this unit to anyone.

I purchased this product for use at a long range match in last fall. In use prior to the match it seemed to work. The battery went dead at that match. Over the winter, the wind blades have started sticking. It will not turn in about a 6mph wind and then if you blow on it real hard it will start reading. Don't waste your money. I'm going to be buying a Kestral and pitching this product in the trash.

Received for Christmas. The instructions were terrible so I called Midway and they sent all they had which was some better. Trying to use it is a disappointment, winds gusting to 25mph and swirling cannot get reading some times. Even when I can feel air movement, the meter doesn’t read.
