5 Best Broadheads
When bowhunting, you want to choose the best broadheads so you don't have to track a long or sparse blood trail. There are several major choices to make when choosing a broadhead. Here are some factors to look out for along with our picks for the top broadheads available at MidwayUSA.
Mechanical or Fixed Blade
Fixed Blade Broadheads
The debate between mechanical and fixed-blade broadheads is as old as time. Each offers its own advantages. Fixed blade broadheads generally offer deeper penetration and have no moving parts. This means there are a lot fewer things that can go wrong upon impact. They allow hunters to easily crush through bone and hide. Check out options from brands like Magnus, G5, and Muzzy.
Mechanical Broadheads
Mechanical broadheads expand upon impact, causing massive wound channels. They generally penetrate less but are known to fly truer than fixed-blade broadheads. They are also known for easy-to-track blood trails. The major setback of mechanical broadheads is that with more moving parts, they are more susceptible to malfunction than fixed-blade broadheads. Brands like Swhacker, Rage, and Grim Reaper all provide hunters with quality mechanical broadheads.
Number of Blades
The number of blades on your broadhead is another factor to consider. Most broadheads range from 2 to 4 blades. Broadheads with fewer blades generally penetrate deeper, while broadheads with more blades have a larger cutting surface and can lead to better blood trails.
Varying Uses
Your broadhead selection will vary depending on the species you’re hunting and the bow you are using. For whitetails, there is quite a bit of give and take. For large game like elk or moose, you’ll need a deep penetrating broadhead. For turkeys, deep penetration is not as much of a concern, and most hunters prefer a broadhead with a large cutting surface. Crossbow broadheads are optimized for flying at high speeds and can vary from traditional compound bow broadheads.
Durability
Durability can play a major role in your broadhead decision. If you’re after that buck of a lifetime and only plan to shoot a broadhead once, durability may not be as much of a concern. However, if you plan on shooting multiple deer or hogs or even want some practice shots, broadhead durability is incredibly important for getting multiple shots with a single broadhead.

Outstanding broadhead!!!! ...
Outstanding broadhead!!!! I was practicing for the upcoming bow season, the target I was shooting was a 2X2 styrofoam block my arrow went through the bock and hit a 2" pipe fence thats was 4 feet behind the target. When the arrow impacted the fence it caused a bur on the fence from impact. The broadhead was shoved back into the arrow shaft about 3 inches. the blades were still intact and the only damage to the broadhead was the trokar tip wasnt quite as sharp as it was before the devastating blow. My arrow on the other hand had seen better days. I LOVE these Broadheads. Tough and reliable with outstanding and devastating performance!!!!- James, 8/19/2011 Shop Now

About Swhacker Broadheads
Developed by former aerospace engineer Rick Forrest, who loved mechanical broadheads but hated how they had shallow penetration or broke when hunting large game. He sought out to design a broadhead whose main cutting blades would open only after passing through the ribs. The result is the SWHACKER mechanical broadhead with a unique “Slice Twice” blade design. MidwayUSA offers Swhacker’s top-performing mechanical broadheads, including the Levi Morgan Series, and the Hybrid 4-Blade, and fixed blade broadheads like the Razor 4-Blade. We also carry replacement blades and sharpeners for your maintenance needs. For bowhunters looking to deliver a massive blow to their next deer and ensure a quick recovery, look for Swhacker broadheads.

Holy cow what a head
This offering from Magnus is one of the best purchases I have made. Flight is incredible and they group right with my field points. The deer I took last year with this head did not go very far and left a blood trail that could be seen for several yards ahead. Awesome head and made in the USA. I would recommend them to anyone, compound or crossbow shooters will love them as they fly very good out of both.- Preeminent, 5/31/2017 Shop Now

If you can keep yourself ...
If you can keep yourself out of the gimmick game you will find the simplicity of this broadhead is where it's at. It shoots well, but that is more an assessment of bow tuning and shooting form. The penetration on bone, muscle, and mass I've witnessed on elk is nothing short of remarkable. Plus there are few feelings as good as resharpening a proven head and sending it through the next game.- Reid, 8/19/2010 Shop Now
