5 Best Ice Fishing Augers

Every ice fisherman needs an ice auger and whether you are looking for your first auger or upgrading your current ice auger there is an auger on this list for you. The first thing to consider when choosing an ice auger is how its powered. The most common ice augers are either hand, gas, propane, or electric powered. Hand augers are lighter and typically cheaper, if you are a beginner looking for your first ice auger you can't go wrong with a hand ice auger but be prepared to work. Gas or Propane augers are more expensive and heavier but make it much easier to drill holes in the ice. There are also drill bit Ice Augers which try to provide a middle ground between gas and hand augers, although you will need to provide your own drill. The list below is our 5 best with augers that are gas, propane, and hand powered from brands like Eskimo, StrikeMaster, and K-Drill.

What Customers Are Saying

Works just as advertised

We don't get a ton of chances to ice fish here in central Missouri, but I decided this wasn't a huge investment and would save me a lot of time when we do. I was right. We rarely get ice over 6" thick, so I went with the larger 8" diameter. I cut probably 15 holes in 4" ice in a morning run of a few farm ponds. Really easy to work and does a nice job. I followed some advice about not using the bottom of the auger to break that last bit of ice on the bottom of the hole, but instead go past it and pull back up to break it. I'm sure that is better on the blades. Can't really speak to the life of the blades at this point, but I didn't notice much of a difference from hole 1 to hole 15...

Eskimo High Compression 40 CC Propane 10" Quantum Ice Auger

The Eskimo HC40 propane auger was designed from the ground up to run on propane, and the engineers at Eskimo took full advantage of the higher octane rating of propane fuel. Many ice anglers are switching to 4-cycle propane powered augers because they are clean burning and low maintenance. The higher compression ratio creates more power out of a smaller package, meaning the angler has a lighter weight auger with the power to quickly cut an eight or ten inch hole. The powerful high compression HC40 engine, paired with an all-metal, sealed, ball bearing transmission and fast cutting 2 blade Quantum auger, gives anglers the reliability and dependability they have come to expect from Eskimo—in an extremely powerful, lightweight package.

  • 40CC, High-Compression 4-Cycle Engine
  • Quantum Auger
  • Quick-release Bottle Holder
  • No Prime Fuel System
  • Low Maintenance
  • Minimal Emissions
