Top 5 Most Accurate Long Range Hunting Rifles

If you finally drew that coveted tag and are planning for your next big game hunting adventure, don't overlook one of the most important tools at your disposal--your hunting rifle. We would love to help you find the perfect long-range rifle for your next big game hunt. Here are a few factors and features to evaluate when selecting your new rifle, along with our picks for the best long-range hunting rifles.

Barrels

A quality barrel is one of the most important factors in a gun’s accuracy. With today’s technology, there are many adequate options for long-distance precision. While there are many factors that go into a good barrel, here are a few things to look for.

Twist Rate – Twist rate is the number of inches it takes for a bullet to spin once in a barrel. For example, a 1:7 twist means the bullet does a full twist every 7 inches of the barrel. Your bullet weight, combined with the twist of the barrel, plays a major role in long-range accuracy.

Fluted Barrels – Fluted barrels can play a major role in your long-range hunting success. Fluted barrels offer reduced weight and improved heat dissipation for more accurate follow-up shots.

Threaded Muzzle – Threaded muzzles open your rifle up to a range of accuracy-enhancing features such as muzzle brakes. Many of your favorite rifle manufacturers, like Bergara, Tikka, and Christensen Arms, offer threaded barrels.

Barrel Length – Barrel length can have effects on the accuracy and overall weight of your hunting setup. It is essential to select a barrel length that provides the optimal balance for your needs.

Triggers

Having a trigger that fits your needs can improve your comfort level when shooting, along with your accuracy. You’ll need to determine if a single-stage or double-stage trigger works best for you. You may also want to consider an adjustable trigger that allows you to customize the trigger pull.

Stock

Having the right stock can add the extra precision needed for those long-distance shots at the edge of your gun’s effective range. Features like adjustable cheekpieces, length of pull spacers, and the proper grip can take you to another level of shooting accuracy!

Optics

While not directly correlated to the performance of your rifle, the right scope and scope mounts play a big role in your hunting success and accuracy. Be sure to get a scope that can hold zero and has the proper reticle and magnification to meet your needs. Luckily, MidwayUSA carries scopes from trusted brands like Vortex, Leupold, Burris, and more!

Ammo

No matter how good your rifle is, it will never perform to its potential without good ammo. Choose from a range of ammunition from brands like Barnes, Hornady, Federal Premium, and more for the tightest groups on the range or in the field.

All of these factors play a major role in the accuracy of your rifle, along with the overall skill of the shooter. It is important to know your limits and get plenty of practice before a long-range hunting trip. Here are our favorite long-range rifles, from budget options to the finest precision rifles on the market!

Really happy with the purchase

Took some time but finally got this in 6.5cm. First time out had 3 shots to zero and then started putting up groups with NF NXS. Consistently under 1"-0.75" with Hornady PH and actually had one group that was just a ragged hole. The first day. Bolt is still breaking in so a little rough at times, the trigger was crisp and the magazine eject is going to take some getting used to (inside of the trigger guard so you eject by pushing your trigger finger foward). The sling connectors are magpul, which I don't think I saw during the buying process so make sure you have some at home. Very much recommend the gun.

Everybody should own one!

I purchased this gun as a hunting rifle. Where I hunt sometimes getting under 500 yards can't be done due to terrain and timber. I bought this based on the ballistics of the Hornady 143 ELD-X. The rifle is heavier than I would like for climbing mountains in Idaho. However, that's not a make or break it for me and I got use to it after the first few hours. I like the weight of it for farther shots. I bought this rifle just before Covid struck so getting a load tuned for it took some time. After getting a load ready I set up a range out to 900 yards and started practicing. This rifle and bullet combination worked absolutely great! The recoils is compared to any of my 5.56 rifles. This means my rifle stayed on target and I could witness my hits. This also means my wife likes to shoot this rifle too. The adjustable comb and stock are nice options. The rifle fits right every time. I don't think you can go wrong with this gun. During load development most of my rounds were MOA. My final 3 shot group was .2 ...

Excellent Rifle

I ordered this rifle from Midway USA and have owned it two weeks now and put 50 rounds of ammo through it. Both this Bergara B-14 and my Savage 110 Desert Tactical produces 3/8"- 1/2" groups at 100 yards with my reloads using Hornady 140 ELD-X bullets, CCI 200 primers, and IMR 4350 or Alliant Reloader 19 powder in Hornady 6.5 Creedmoor cases. The Bergara B-14 HMR has a heavier barrel and much better stock but the Savage 110 has the superior trigger. Both of these fine rifles are keepers.

Great rifle, after it was sent back to the Manufacturer

When I received the rifle I followed the Christensen Arms break in procedure. Even after doing this the rifle could barely do 1.5" MOA @ 100 yards. I contacted Christensen Arms about it and they had me send it in. 6 weeks past and I received the firearm back. They had to put a new barrel on it and thoroughly tested it and claimed that it would shoot sub-moa with Factory Barnes 180 grain TTSX ammo. They were both right and wrong. The rifle does shoot sub moa, but with that ammo they used it actually shoots sub half moa. It stinks that I had to do this for a brand new rifle, but they did correct the issue in a relatively short amount of time.
