Controlled round feed versus push feed; there are two opinions on which is best.
Controlled round feed refers to a system where the cartridge is under the control of the extractor as it is chambered. On a model 98 Mauser, notice how the rim of the cartridge slides under the extractor and is held there as it is stripped from the magazine.
This is why we call it a controlled round feed; the extractor remains in control of the cartridge.
With a push feed action like in the Remington 700, the bolt still strips the cartridge from the magazine, but the extractor doesn't capture the rim of the cartridge until the bolt is completely closed.
So there you have it, controlled round feed versus push feed. You'll have to decide which is best.
