How Bullet Weight Affects Accuracy and Point of Impact

Bullet weight is an important component in rifle accuracy. For any given cartridge, there are usually several different bullet weights to choose from. Each of these cartridges is loaded to a different overall length:

This causes the bullets' bearing surfaces to be of varying distances from the rifling, affecting accuracy.

A change in muzzle velocity and bullet profile will also affect trajectory. Sometimes, this change requires a re-zero, especially for long-range shooting.

It's also important to note that because different-weight bullets are of different lengths, they must be matched to the twist rate of the barrel, which you may need to measure. You can do this with a cleaning rod, as demonstrated in this instructional video by Larry Potterfield.

The best way, however, to determine which bullet weight is best for you is by spending time at the range. For the ultimate in rifle accuracy, try several different bullet weights and pick the one that works best in your rifle.
