Hand checkering a stock is a fascinating process. Follow along as we checker the stock on this Winchester Model 67.
We'll start by marking the center lines of the stock for reference and then laying out the borders of the panel. Next, I cut the border with a 60-degree single-line cutter.
We then use the scribe and straightedge to mark the master or guidelines. The crossing angle of the master lines defines the length or shape of the diamonds.
Now I'm using a twenty-line per inch, three-line cutter using the master line as a guide. Fill out the entire panel, then cut the crossing lines. I'll continue to use the 60-degree cutter for the first deepening of the lines.
Lastly, I switch to a 90-degree cutter for the final pointing up of the diamonds. For this stock, we want a traditional bordered panel, so a special two-line border tool is used.
Here's the finished job. Now we can seal the checkering to keep out moisture, fascinating right?
