We will install classic two-swivel screw studs for the sling, which is pretty standard for a custom rifle. To find the location of the front stud, I mark the centerline of the stock and measure three inches back from the forend tip—this marks the center of my stud.
The location of the rear stud is three inches from the toe. I begin by marking the location of the screw holes, then dimpling them using a center punch and drilling the first hole.
I turn in the screw with the stud in place, drill the second hole, and tighten down the other screw.
After scribing the outline of the stud, I use several chisels and gouges to remove material from inside the lines.
Once the stud is fully seated, I turn in the screws and repeat the process for the other stud. It's a pretty slick-looking pair of swivel studs and now we have a way to carry the rifle.
