How to Point and Flute the Comb on a Rifle Stock

Pointing and fluting the comb is an easy way to improve both the function and appearance of any stock. Let me show you how we do this simple job.

I'll begin by marking the new angle of the point of the comb at about a hundred and thirty degrees, and then file down to that mark using a smooth flat file.

We'll also need to file down the top of the wrist and radius the area where the cuts meet using a round file.

Begin filing the top of the wrist

The flute should run toward the toe of the stock and be about an inch and a half in length. Now file the flutes using a round file.

I'm going to leave the bridge of the comb about a quarter of an inch wide on this stock. We'll blend these areas of the flutes using the round file, and switch to a smaller file to blend the bridge.

So there you have it, an easy way to change the look and feel of any stock.
