How to Properly Remove a Barrel from a Bolt Action Rifle

Pulling or removing the barrel on most bolt-action rifles can be pretty straightforward if you've got the right tools. Remember when handling any firearm, always keep it pointed in a safe direction, then check and make sure it's unloaded.

The first tool you got to have is a barrel vise like this one from Wheeler Engineering, and you'll need to bolt it to a heavy bench.

Degreasing the barrel helps keep it from slipping in the vise and the spacers are coated with powdered rosin. When clamping the barrel, you'll want to make sure the spacers are held tightly together, or else the barrel will turn.

Next, you'll need an action wrench. Notice how I place a small piece of brass between the wrench and the receiver—this helps prevent marring.

I like to start with the wrench handle in a vertical position as it gives the best possible leverage. It normally takes a lot of force to break the threads loose, but you can screw the receiver the rest of the way off by hand.

And that's how you pull a barrel. It's not too difficult if you've got the right tools, but impossible if you don't.
