Coming off the dog days of summer, it’s the time of year when the surface temperature starts getting cool, and shad start coming up higher in the water column. It’s the topwater time of the year. There are still times in September and October when it still gets hot. The fish have left cover and are now migrating around, following balls of shad and using them as food, shade, oxygen, and cover. That's the time when a spoon is absolutely deadly.
The Mark Rose Lil’ Ledge Spoon is one that I spent a long time on with Strike King, and it's a dynamite little spoon. It was designed when the big spoons came out on the Tennessee River. Kelly Jordan brought the big spoon to life in a UMF event on Kentucky Lake, then came along the big flutter spoons, such as the Strike King Sexy Spoon. The Tennessee River got a lot of pressure along that time and I wanted a little spoon. I was coming along with a cheap little aftermarket spoon and raking up behind those big spoons.
At that point, I approached Strike King, and we came out with the Lil’ Ledge Spoon. What makes this spoon a little different than just a plain lead spoon? First, a noticeable curve in the body catches water and causes the bait to glide backward into the fish’s faces as they run up on it, which will often cause a reaction strike.
Another feature that makes the Lil’ Ledge Spoon special is the swivel molded in the lead atop the bait’s head. Most spoons just have a little loop on the top where you can simply add a swivel. When you have a loop and then a swivel attached to it, you get a lot of pivoting, which can cause the line to catch on the hook more easily. The built-in swivel on the Lil' Ledge Spoon reduces the pivoting so the line is less likely to snag the hook.
White with chrome is my favorite color combination for this bait. It’s one you won’t see with other spoons. The chrome top flashes in the sun, while the matted dull white finish on the underside works well on cloudy days.
It comes with a Mustad KVD Elite Triple Grip hook – a premium 2x strong hook that will not bend out.
Lil' Ledge Spoon... Better get you a sack full of them!
