How to Preserve Your Mouth Call

By Midwest Whitetail • March 21, 2023

Here's a quick tip on how to make your mouth calls last more than one season. For every turkey hunter, one of the most frustrating things to deal with is having your mouth call reeds stuck together. One way to prevent this is to separate those reeds at the end of every hunt, or at least at the end of every season. You can take a piece of plastic--it can be a toothpick, or you can use the tab dividers on a file cabinet--and cut them into little triangles. Feed them in between the reeds of your mouth call. That allows you to break them apart quickly and get right into calling instead of having to spend time trying to separate them. This couple of extra seconds of effort saved can make all the difference in the world, especially at the end of the season.

It is extremely important to store your mouth call in the right place so that you can get another season or two out of it. At the end of every season, soak your mouth calls in Listerine, or something that'll kill bacteria then put them back in the case with those reed separators in place and store them somewhere damp like a refrigerator.
