Spyderco fifth-generation Native 5 Lightweight is already the product of decades of refinement and painstaking research and development. Just when it seemed it couldn’t possibly get any better, Spyderco raised the bar again by crafting it with state-of-the-art Maxamet blade steel. Developed by Carpenter Technology Corporation, one of the world’s premier suppliers of high performance steels, Maxamet was specifically formulated for use in the rollers of their steel rolling mills. Shaping hot steel demands an incredibly hard, tough alloy that can retain those properties in extreme conditions. Maxamet meets those challenges, transcending the properties of conventional tool steels and approaching those of cemented carbides. Spyderco, one of the very few companies to successfully master this demanding material, is now using it in the production of an elite group of its US-made products to give them unprecedented cutting performance and edge retention. In the Native 5 Lightweight, this material is the basis of a full flat-ground drop-point blade with a fully accessible Trademark Round Hole for ambidextrous one-handed opening. The blade is paired with a lightweight, Bi-Directional Textured handle injection molded from gray fiberglass-reinforced nylon (FRN) and supported by a high-strength back lock mechanism. A stout four-position pocket clip capable of left or right-side, tip-up or tip down carry completes the package, ensuring that both carry and operation of this extraordinary knife are completely ambidextrous.
